‘Black Panther’ Breaks Box-Office Records for Second Weekend

Move aside Spider-Man and Captain America, Marvel has a new king in town. “Black Panther” is a runaway success at the box office, having already surpassed much of the rest of the Marvel Universe for its capacity to sell tickets.

In fact, after a second straight spectacular weekend, “Black Panther” has slinked its way to the second-biggest second weekend gross of all time, behind only “Stars Wars” sequel “The Force Awakens.” Even adjusting for inflation, the Chadwick Boseman-starring superhero flick is the fifth-best second weekend ever, trailing only “The Force Awakens,” Batman film “The Dark Knight,” Marvel favorite “The Avengers” and dinosaur action/adventure movie “Jurassic World.”

With over $400 million taken in domestically, “Black Panther” is quickly becoming one of the biggest success stories for Marvel Studios and Disney, a status achieved not for lack of competition. In fact, the film, set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda, has already eclipsed big-name superhero properties such as the Benedict Cumberbatch vehicle “Doctor Strange,” “Captain America: The First Avenger” and all of the Fox-made films in the “X-Men” franchise after just its first weekend of release.

In earning almost $110 million in domestic gross in its second weekend, the movie also showed remarkable staying power. That 46 percent drop from its first weekend to its second was the smallest drop-off in business over that time period of any Marvel Studios film, beating out “Iron Man,” “Thor” and “The Avengers.” It’s currently on pace to blow by “Spider-Man” and “Wonder Woman” in the next week, making it the fifth-highest grossing superhero movie of all time behind “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Night Rises,” “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” as well as the third-highest solo superhero film behind the two “Dark Knight” films.

International box-office receipts added an additional $300 million to the total, putting “Black Panther” over $700 million internationally. And with it appearing as though there’s plenty of room left to run in its popularity, “Black Panther” could continue breaking records and raking in cash.
