Belk expansion will bring its first NC outlet store to Charlotte’s Northlake Mall

The Belk at Northlake Mall is expanding with a new outlet store, which will be a first for the company’s home state of North Carolina, mall and company officials announced on Thursday.

Charlotte-based Belk is reformatting the Northlake store by converting the upper level into a separate outlet store. The bottom level will remain as a regular Belk store.

Belk Outlet sells clearance items from larger Belk stores and high-end brands that previously were unavailable at the store location.

The conversion is expected to increase foot traffic and improve the shopping experience for customers, mall manager Adam Kamlet stated.

Belk opened its first outlet store in January 2023 in Greeneville, Tennessee, then added another 16 outlets.

“We’re excited to bring the Belk Outlet shopping experience to our hometown customers,” said Don Hendricks, CEO of Belk, in a statement.

Work for the new outlet will start in June and it’s scheduled to open in September. The store at Northlake will remain open during the transition.

About Northlake Mall

Located at 6801 Northlake Mall Drive, the mall has more than 1 million square feet of retail space.

Along with Belk, some of the other major services include Dillard’s, Macy’s, an AMC theater and 140 other retailers and restaurants. It’s managed by Spinoso Real Estate Group, a national real estate group for enclosed-mall transformation.

The mall has faced a number of financial and other problems over the past three years. It fell into receivership for failing to pay its debts and now faces a potential sale.

About Belk

Belk is an iconic brand in the Charlotte region, and the privately-owned department store chain opened its first shop in 1888. It has nearly 300 Belk stores in 16 Southeastern states.

In 2015, the Belk family sold the company to private equity firm Sycamore Partners for $3 billion.

And in February 2021, Belk left Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after one day, while planning to restructure and eliminate $450 million of debt. end add
