Beastie Boys grant Biden campaign use of 'Sabotage.' Here's why that's a big deal for music fans

The Beastie Boys are making some noise.

The hip-hop group has, for the first time ever, licensed one of its songs for use in a a political advertisement.

That commercial, for presidential hopeful Joe Biden, debuted over the weekend. It features 1994 Beastie Boys hit "Sabotage."

The ad debuted during Sunday night's NFL matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns. (Pittsburgh won, 38-7.)

The minute-long commercial features Joe Malcoun, owner of the Blind Pig, a music venue in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In it, Malcoun talks about his financial struggles due to coronavirus lockdown orders and questions President Donald Trump's response to the pandemic.

“A lot of restaurants and bars that have been mainstays for years will not make it through this — this is Donald Trump’s economy,” Malcoun says in a press release from Biden's campaign. “My only hope, for my family and this business, and my community, is that Joe Biden wins this election.”

The ad debuted just days after Biden made a trip to Michigan, one of several key battleground states.
