Some Barnwell Industries (NYSEMKT:BRN) Shareholders Have Copped A Big 59% Share Price Drop

Barnwell Industries, Inc. (NYSEMKT:BRN) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 187% in the last quarter. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 59% in that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. We'd err towards caution given the long term under-performance.

Check out our latest analysis for Barnwell Industries

Barnwell Industries wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over half a decade Barnwell Industries reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 19% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. Arguably, the market has responded appropriately to this business performance by sending the share price down 16% (annualized) in the same time period. We don't generally like to own companies that lose money and don't grow revenues. You might be better off spending your money on a leisure activity. You'd want to research this company pretty thoroughly before buying, it looks a bit too risky for us.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 27% in the last year, Barnwell Industries shareholders lost 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 16% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 5 warning signs we've spotted with Barnwell Industries (including 2 which is make us uncomfortable) .
