To learn more about the MeUndies x Backstreet Boys Holiday Collection, which launches today, November 10, we sat down with one of the Backstreet Boys himself, Brian Littrell, to discuss the special collection and what it means to him and his bandmates.

Looking back at 29 years of Backstreet Boys style

We chatted with Brian Littrell (prior to the passing of bandmate Nick Carter's younger brother Aaron Carter), about the evolution of personal style over the Backstreet Boys’ 29-year history, and he revealed a journey of self-empowerment. Thinking back to the start of their larger than life career, the clothes that the band wore were selected for them with minimal input from the Boys themselves. “We were just thrown into this thing. ‘Hey come here, take this picture, wear this, do that,’” he recalls, noting how little control they had over their image at the time. “If you look back at those pictures in the 90s, you’ll see the Backstreet Boys always had some crazy things on, from Tommy Hilfiger to Versace to you name it—jumpsuits, and onesies and motorcycle gear. We did everything!”

Nowadays, he and his bandmates have a lot more agency in how they’re dressed, which allows each of their personal styles to emerge in interesting ways. The one thing Littrell has never sacrificed? His preferences on wardrobe essentials. “I’ve always been picky about socks and underwear,” he says. “I really don’t know why, other than that these are the things that are closest to you.”

There are some lessons you learn with a life spent touring the world, and being comfortable might be one of the more important. It’s the reason that a partnership with MeUndies felt so natural to the band. “Fashion to me is all about comfort, and with MeUndies, they’re super comfortable. The fabrics are unbelievable, soft and breathable as well,” says Littrell. “It’s a perfect fit.”

The MeUndies collaboration celebrates the release of the band’s latest album, A Very Backstreet Christmas. Inspired by the lead single off the album, “Happy Days,” the collection is designed to help you “party like it’s ‘99.” The line features five holiday-ready prints. There’s a classic Festive Plaid, while the Light Me Up print features Christmas lights against a green background. The Cosmic Mistletoe print features aliens, planets and yes—mistletoe, all rendered in a graphic ‘80s Space Invaders style. The ‘80s aesthetic is also found in the Piece on Earth print, which features repeating illustrations of pizza slices.

The traditional black and red Buffalo Plaid is available in a staggering 60 different styles, including bras, briefs, boxers, dog scarves, socks and more. Littrell loves the Buffalo Plaid onesie in particular, praising its soft and stretchy design. “We actually have a little bit of time off from touring the world,” he says, “so I’m looking forward to sitting by the tree in my onesie.”

When it comes to their underwear, the Backstreet Boys don’t play around. “I’m a briefs guy, and MeUndies has some great styles” says Littrell of his preferred silhouette. When it comes to the other Boys' preferences, you’ll have to find out for yourself—perhaps as an audience member during their highly acclaimed “DNA World Tour.” Littrell laughs as he points out that during one of their mid-show costume changes, bandmates Kevin Richardson and AJ McLean often toss their autographed MeUndies underwear into the audience. “We’ve been hit with so many bras, panties and stuffed animals over the years,” he says. “It’s our turn to give back.”
