‘Bachelorette’ star Michelle Young was a college basketball star. See for yourself

Long before she was vying for the heart of Matt James on “The Bachelor” and choosing her suitor on the new season of “The Bachelorette,” Michelle Young was a force on the basketball court.

Young, this season’s bachelorette on the hit ABC show, played basketball for four seasons at Bradley University, a Division I college in Peoria, Illinois. A starter for the majority of her final three years, Young scored 1,062 career points — ranking 13th in program history.

As a junior during the 2013-14 season, her 14.3 points per game were the highest at the university since 2001-02. That helped her to be named to the Honorable Mention All-Missouri Valley Conference Team.

Other accolades for the current star of “The Bachelorette” include her tying the single-game school records with 38 points and 17 field goals during her senior season.

Her conference profiled her in 2014 when she won one of her two MVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week awards.

Originally from Minnesota, Young was hailed as “perhaps the fastest player” when she was named to the Star Tribune’s all-metro first team in 2011.

Young said in a “Meet the Braves” video segment prior to the 2013-14 season that she originally did not want to play basketball, but grew to love the sport.

That was shown during her junior season, when she hit the game-winning layup against Illinois State in the final seconds of the game.

She’s now a teacher in Minnesota, but admitted last year she misses the sport.

“50% missing the game. 40% missing the camaraderie,” Young said in an Instagram post. “10% missing the grind. 0% missing the conditioning workouts.”

Young will choose between 24 men on this season of “The Bachelorette.” The show airs Tuesdays on ABC.
