Audi's All-New A5, Set to Replace the A4, Debuts Next Week

audi a5 b10 teaser
Audi's All-New A5 Will Debut Next WeekAudi

Audi is in the middle of a massive rollout of fresh metal, with more than 20 new models planned to arrive over the next two years. The next one off the boat is a new Audi A5 — but maybe not in the manner you're expecting, as the new car will be a replacement for both the outgoing A5 and the car currently known as the A4. That car will be seen for the first time on July 16th, 2025... known as of this article's publication as Tuesday of next wee.

Details are scarce for now. The teaser image above, which was shared with the announcement of an announcement, suggests either an Avant (station wagon) or sportback (sedan with a hatchback trunk) will debut first. Regardless of what debuts first, the A5 should be available in a few body styles when it actually hits the market. The 2024 A4 and A5 lines include a coupe, a sedan, a wagon, a sportback, and a convertible in America, although the two-door models are leaving the lineup for the 2025 model year.

Why, you may ask, is the A5 taking over for the A4, which has been a staple of the Audi lineup since 1994? Well, under the brand's new naming convention, models with an even number after their A, Q or whatever other letter designation Ingolstadt wants to use will be electric vehicles, while internal-combustion models will use odd numbers. Ergo, the new generation of ICE cars competing with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series will go by A5, while the A4 branding will be reserved for a forthcoming all-electric car to battle the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 / upcoming "Neue Klasse" i3.

A second teaser image shared to Instagram shows the headlight of an unseen new model, which is likely the new A5. Audi has provided few other details about the upcoming car, but the press release does note that it will mark the debut of the brand's next generation of internal combustion engines. Those, the release goes on to say, "will be more efficient thanks to partially electric driving." The only other hint about the new car is a tagline, "modern sportiness meets premium proportions." Those apparently upscale proportions will be revealed in less than a week, so that mystery will be solved soon.

An all-electric A6 e-tron will debut later this month, followed by a new Q5 in the fall. Audi began its rollout of new models with the new Q6 e-tron, which debuted back in March.
