The Audi Q8 E-tron Might Be on Its Deathbedaudi
  • Audi announced that it may end production of the Q8 e-tron and Q8 e-tron Sportback early.

  • The automaker cited falling demand for the electric luxury segment and the arrival of EVs built on a newer platform.

  • The death of the Q8 e-tron could lead Audi to close its factory in Brussels, Belgium, where the SUV is currently built.

Audi's largest electric vehicle, the Q8 e-tron SUV, just underwent a refresh for 2024. The sharper looks and improved range accompanied a name change that added the "Q8" prefix to better represent the SUV's position in Audi's lineup. But now Audi has announced that the Q8 e-tron and its Sportback sibling may meet an early demise due to a significant drop in demand.

Audi says it is experiencing "a global decline in customer orders in the electric luxury class segment" that is harming sales of the two Q8 e-tron variants. As a result, Audi confirmed that it is considering an early end to production for the SUV, which first arrived for the 2019 model year as the "e-tron" before adding the sleeker Sportback model in 2020. The decline in interest in Audi's biggest electric SUV corresponds with the arrival of new models on Audi's latest architecture, the Premium Platform Electric, and the new Q6 e-tron is due to arrive in the U.S. later this year.

The end of production would bring a restructuring of the facility in Brussels, Belgium where they are built, although no plans have been made public and Audi notes the possibility of "cessation of operations if no alternative is found." Audi says that structural difficulties make it challenging to change the plant's layout, so a full stop of production for the Q8 e-tron would likely be required to retool for a different vehicle. However, Audi also refers to higher production costs, so the plant could be shuttered completely.
