Audi confirms new A4 Allroad to list from $44,950

Audi says that its all-new 2017 A4 Allroad will hit dealers in the United States this fall at a base price of $44,950.

The new A4 Allroad is based on the latest A4 sedan and wagon, the latter of which Audi says it has not yet confirmed for the American market. Although it shares its body, interior, engines, and all-wheel drive system with the standard A4 range, the Allroad features a modestly higher suspension and additional side cladding designed to give it a more rugged appearance.

Interestingly, Audi has slightly tweaked the car's name for 2017, adding A4 nomenclature—a move that probably signals Audi's intention to build on the Allroad nameplate with additional models. Last year, its predecessor was simply known as the Audi Allroad.

Overall, the A4 Allroad sits about 1.3 inches higher off the ground than a standard A4. It also includes as standard a hill descent control system that keeps the vehicle's speed constant when descending grades. Overall, the A4 Allroad is not designed for severe off road use, however.

The A4 Allroad will be offered exclusively with Audi's 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, rated at 252 horsepower and and 273 pound-feet of torque. A 7-speed dual clutch transmission is the only gearbox on offer, and the A4 Allroad sends power to all four wheels.

Audi says it will offer the A4 Allroad in three different flavors: Premium ($44,950 including a mandatory $950 destination charge), Premium Plus ($47,950), and Prestige ($52,350).

Standard on all configurations is the automaker's Pre Sense Basic system, which prepares the brakes, windows, and seat belt pretensioners in the event of an impending collision, as well as Pre Sense City that automatically applies the brakes if it detects a wreck at speeds under 52 mph.

The automaker's "virtual cockpit" system that includes a 12.3-inch display in place of a traditional instrument cluster is optional, as is a full-color heads up display that projects information like the vehicle's current speed onto the windshield.

Audi hasn't yet released fuel economy data for the A4 Allroad and the model hasn't been crash tested, but the standard A4 recently received the IIHS' coveted Top Safety Pick+ ranking.
