Athabasca Oil (TSE:ATH) shareholder returns have been incredible, earning 380% in 3 years

Investing can be hard but the potential fo an individual stock to pay off big time inspires us. Mistakes are inevitable, but a single top stock pick can cover any losses, and so much more. One such superstar is Athabasca Oil Corporation (TSE:ATH), which saw its share price soar 380% in three years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 24% gain in the last three months.

Since the stock has added CA$269m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Athabasca Oil moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of Athabasca Oil's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Athabasca Oil has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 167% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 20%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Athabasca Oil is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
