Arian Foster’s retirement will aid the Miami Dolphins in the long run

Struggling with injuries throughout most of the 2016 season, Arian Foster made the shocking but correct decision to hang up his pads for good. I applaud him for two things, putting his health first in this situation and for helping the Miami Dolphins in the long run with his decision.

Why does the loss of a running back help the Miami Dolphins? Arian Foster was becoming a bit of ball and chain on the team’s backfield. They were trying to use him, hoping they could get some of the old Pro Bowler out of him. Unfortunately, every time Foster went out on the field and failed to get the job done, it hurt the rest of the offense and the other running back’s who lost out on that opportunity.

Between the team’s three current running backs, their average age is 23. The younger generation is alive and well in Miami. What do these young running back’s need most? Reps. With the constantly injured Foster taking up those reps, the young players were beginning to suffer for almost no fault of their own.

While Jay Ajayi has been dominating opponents as the starter, Foster’s retirement basically clears the way for rookie Kenyan Drake and third year back Damien Williams to get more reps in the offense. With the three young men now leading the way, Miami may have their first clear sign at the position since the days of Ronnie and Rickie.

Jay Ajayi is the all-purpose runner. He can pound it up the middle and cut it to the outside. Kenyan Drake is that speedster that can be a game-changer given the opportunity. Damien Williams is the check down passing option. Give him space after the pass and Williams can get you that first down.

Before that, Arian Foster was just taking up those players reps. Taking opportunities from the younger players, Foster’s mere presence on the offense was hurting both himself and the rest of the Miami Dolphins. It wasn’t his fault. Was it though?

Either way, the news of Foster’s retirement is something I think we should celebrate. The career of a former Pro Bowl player is now over. He decided to put his body and family over his career, something I think we can all applaud. In the end, this move is not only the right one for him but also for the Miami Dolphins.
