Apple (AAPL) unveiled Tuesday its first over-the-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, priced for the Canadian market at $779, or US$549.

The company said in a release that the headphones are available for order starting today in the U.S. and Canada. The product will first ship on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

Apple said the headphones come in five colours including space grey, silver, sky blue, green, and pink.

The company also announced Fitness+, launching Dec. 14, which gives users access to “studio-style workouts” on their Apple devices. Fitness+ will launch with 10 popular workouts including High-Intensity Interval Training, Strength, Yoga, Dance, Core, Cycling, Treadmill, Rowing, and Mindful Cooldown.

Gene Munster, an analyst at Loup Ventures, said in a note that given the price and design, the new headphones will “quickly become a status symbol.”

Munster questioned what will happen with the Beats brand in the long term now that the tech giant has entered the over-the-ear headphone market.

“We believe Beats revenue in 2020 will approach $800 [million], down from about $1.8 [billion] in 2014, when Apple acquired the company,” he wrote. “Despite this decline, Apple got what it wanted with music streaming services and learnings that were the foundation for AirPods.”

Munster added that the product will “collectively strengthen the fabric of the company’s hardware, software, and service integration.”
