Another new Apple record, Murdoch eyes Discovery? & Digital Ally hits motherlode

Shares of Discovery Communications (DISCA) are 8% higher today on word Rupert Murdoch's Twenty First Century Fox (FOXA) may be interested in buying the broadcaster, according to the Australian Financial Review. Discovery, which owns shows including "Animal Planet," could help Fox expand into the world of on-demand. A Fox spokesperson denied the rumors. However, investors know Murdoch has been itching for a deal following a bid for Time Warner (TWX) last August which was withdrawn after push back from Time Warner's board.

Digital Ally (DGLY), the maker of high-tech video surveillance for law enforcement, may have hit the motherlode. The stock is up 14% after the company was awarded GSA status from the U.S. General Services Administration, a procurement arm of the Federal Government. The Schedule 84 award covers federal, state and local government agencies. The GSA is the most widely used government contract vehicle, representing more than $32 billion in total contract volume in fiscal 2014.

Apple (AAPL) shares continue to advance, even though the broader market is lower today. The stock, now trading around $131 and change, hit a fresh record and its market cap is nearing $800 billion. There is no specific catalyst for the move today and the next big product push that we know of is the Apple Watch. The move is unlikely all watch-related, so it seems just being Apple is enough for investors to keep buying the shares.
