Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in the FX on Hulu limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” Variety has learned.

The series hails from write Dustin Lance Black and is based on the Jon Krakauer novel of the same name. Garfield will star as Pyre, an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer. Edgar-Jones stars as Brenda, a young faithful Mormon who is the victim of a brutal murder.

Black created the series and will serve as an executive producer along with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Samie Kim Falvey and Anna Culp for Imagine Television. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will executive produce via Aggregate Films. David Mackenzie will direct the series in addition to executive producing, with Gillian Berrie also executive producing. FX Productions will produce.

“Dustin Lance Black is a gifted storyteller and the perfect artist to adapt Jon Krakauer’s gripping novel for FX,” said Gina Balian, president of original programming for FX. “Lance joins an incredible creative team led by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard at Imagine Television who have been passionate about telling this story with him for years. We are thrilled that David Mackenzie has come aboard as a director and to have Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones star in Under the Banner of Heaven.”

Garfield has primarily worked in film during his career, picking up an Academy Award nomination in 2017 for his starring role in “Hacksaw Ridge.” He will next be seen alongside Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” His other notable film roles include “The Social Network,” “Silence,” “99 Homes,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Garfield is also an accomplished stage actor, netting a Tony nomination in 2012 for “Death of a Salesman” and a Tony win in 2018 for “Angels in America.”

He is repped by Gordon & French in the UK, CAA, ID and Sloane Offer.

“We at Imagine have been dedicated to telling this powerful story for nearly a decade,” said Grazer and Howard, jointly. “With FX’s belief and support and Lance Black’s relentless commitment we are, at last, on our way. We couldn’t be more excited to be collaborating with David Mackenzie, Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones to bring this project to life.”

Edgar-Jones is best known for starring in the critically-acclaimed Hulu series “Normal People,” which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She has also starred in shows such as “Cold Feet,” “Silent Witness,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Gentleman Jack.” She recently filmed the lead role in “Fresh” opposite Sebastian Stan and is currently filming the feature adaptation of “Where the Crawdads Sing.”

She is repped by Hamilton Hodell in the UK and UTA in the US

“After so many years of work, I’m incredibly grateful to Imagine and FX for their patience with and commitment to bringing this story to screen,” said Black. “Raised in the LDS faith, my hope is that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our own backyards.”

Mackenzie is known for directing films such as “Starred Up,” “Outlaw King,” “Hell or High Water,” and “Young Adam.” He is repped by UTA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
