Amex cutting profits to reorient its business to Main Street

Stocks (^DJI, ^GSPC, ^IXIC) are modestly down at the midday mark, with the energy sector (XLE) taking the biggest hit and utilities (XLU) still in the green. Keith Bliss of Cuttone & Co. joins us live from the New York Stock Exchange.

Amex plays defense as Chase Sapphire Card gains ground

American Express is trying to win back small businesses as it faces new competition in the luxury market. Amex once owned the market for cardholders seeking status. But the huge success of JPMorgan’s Sapphire Reserve Card has forced CEO Ken Chenault to play defense. So today, Amex said card members will earn double rewards for the rest of the year when they shop at eligible small businesses. Amex says the promotion is its largest and longest rewards program ever. Earlier this year, Amex said it would lower the fees it charges small businesses.

Wikileaks dumps Clinton emails detailing Goldman Sachs speeches

Wikileaks is at it again—dumping a slew of Hillary Clinton emails onto the Internet—this time revealing three speeches she made to Goldman Sachs in return for what is believed to be $675,000. Our own Rick Newman is writing about this, and he says it’s a big “nothing burger”—that they’re wonky and won’t damage Clinton’s campaign.
