American Airlines adds new Caribbean destination from Charlotte, in latest route option

American Airlines is adding a new nonstop route from Charlotte to a Caribbean country towards the end of the year, the company said Thursday.

The new route going to St. Vincent and the Grenadines will start in December as part of a winter schedule expansion.

It’s the latest change to benefit Charlotte passengers, as American and Frontier Airlines have been competing for or adding new destinations this year out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Frontier Airlines adds 7 new US, Caribbean destinations from Charlotte airport

American flights to Argyle International Airport on the island of Saint Vincent will start on Dec. 7. The service will be offered on Saturdays only. American said it is the only major U.S. airline offering this route to customers.

Along with beaches, some of the attractions and activities include hiking the La Soufriere Volcano, diving under the sea and the Botanical Gardens in Kingstown., which the royal family of England has visited.

American is also increasing daily service from Charlotte Douglas to Antigua. Routes to V.C. Bird International Airport will begin on Dec. 5. Some of the attractions include the Antigua rain forest, helicopter tours and snorkeling.

During the winter, American Airlines will operate more than 2,350 peak weekly flights to more than 95 destinations in Latin American and Caribbean.

Tickets on all routes will be available for sale at aa.com or American’s mobile app starting May 20.

Other changes for American Airlines

The announcement comes about a month after when American Airlines said it was adding a new nonstop route from Charlotte to Quebec City, starting Aug. 10. Service to the Canadian city will be offered once a week through Nov. 2.

It’s the third route to Canada this year.

Flights to Calgary are being offered on Saturdays, starting June 8 through Sept. 3. New routes from CLT to Vancouver are starting June 5, which will be the only nonstop service between North Carolina and British Columbia.

About Charlotte’s airport

Charlotte has one of the world’s busiest airports, and is the second largest hub for Fort Worth-based American Airlines in the U.S., accounting for about 90% of all flights out of the airport.

CLT ranked as the seventh-busiest airport worldwide for arrivals and departures, according to the Airport Council International’s preliminary rankings for 2022.
