Alacer Gold (TSE:ASR) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 156% Share Price Gain

Alacer Gold Corp. (TSE:ASR) shareholders have seen the share price descend 12% over the month. Despite this, the stock is a strong performer over the last year, no doubt about that. We're very pleased to report the share price shot up 156% in that time. So it is important to view the recent reduction in price through that lense. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Alacer Gold grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit. When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action.

We think that the revenue growth of 23% could have some investors interested. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Alacer Gold shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 156% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 20% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time.
