Aimflex Berhad's (KLSE:AIMFLEX) investors will be pleased with their 22% return over the last three years

One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Aimflex Berhad (KLSE:AIMFLEX) share price is up 22% in the last three years, clearly besting the market return of around 12% (not including dividends).

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 3 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Aimflex Berhad achieved compound earnings per share growth of 18% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 7% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

A Different Perspective

Aimflex Berhad provided a TSR of 22% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 1.1% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Aimflex Berhad is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
