Should You Be Adding OFG Bancorp (NYSE:OFG) To Your Watchlist Today?

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like OFG Bancorp (NYSE:OFG), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

OFG Bancorp's Improving Profits

In the last three years OFG Bancorp's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. It's good to see that OFG Bancorp's EPS has grown from US$3.15 to US$3.86 over twelve months. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 22% gain.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. It's noted that OFG Bancorp's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. OFG Bancorp maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 10% to US$626m. That's a real positive.

While we live in the present moment, there's little doubt that the future matters most in the investment decision process. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for OFG Bancorp?

Are OFG Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own OFG Bancorp shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold US$30m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 2.1%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like OFG Bancorp with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b is about US$5.3m.

OFG Bancorp's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$3.1m in the year leading up to December 2022. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is OFG Bancorp Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for OFG Bancorp is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The growth of EPS may be the eye-catching headline for OFG Bancorp, but there's more to bring joy for shareholders. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. We should say that we've discovered 3 warning signs for OFG Bancorp (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of before investing here.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
