A cord-cutter's guide to watching the Super Bowl

Like it or not, cord cutting is a thing. Adweek says some 300,000 Americans dropped their cable subscriptions in the third quarter of 2015, and the practice is sure to grow as the TV-watching public skews younger.

One of the biggest hurdles for cord cutters is being able to catch live sports and special events. Of course, the biggest of them all is the Super Bowl, the 50th incarnation of which takes place this Sunday in Santa Clara, CA.

So what's a cord cutter to do? Well, CBS and the NFL have you covered. The broadcaster is streaming the game on its website and across various apps, including those for over-the-top products like Apple TV and Roku.

If this is the route you choose, beware of the crowd. You won’t be the only one trying to get the game online, and as the technology is still relatively new, you could end up with a glitchy viewing experience.

If that doesn’t deter you, the CBS streaming experience will reward you with the actual commercials airing during the big game for the first time. Gone are the “Be Back Soon” screens while the rest of the planet laughs at a “puppymonkeybaby” (you’ll see).

But if the high-tech options still give you pause, try a digital antenna. You may remember grandma’s rabbit ears popping out from behind that old TV set, but the new generation of antennae are much sleeker and much more powerful.

Assuming you are close to a digital transmission point (check http://www.antennapoint.com/) you can get the game in full HD with a $40 gadget from your local Best Buy.
