If you have clutter in your home, stuff you no longer use or just want to pull in some extra cash, you should seriously consider having a garage sale. It’s not only a great way to pull in quick, easy money, it can bolster connections with your neighbors and general community — a welcome support in an increasingly digital age, where we may spend more time online with people than in person.

Once you’ve gone through the steps to host a garage sale (contact local government as many municipalities require you to have a permit, always hold sales on weekends and spread the word not only via flyers but on neighborhood online groups including Facebook Marketplace), it’s time to figure out exactly what’s worth putting up for sale.

Let’s look at the nine items you can sell for the most money at your garage sale.

Wealthy people know the best money secrets. Learn how to copy them.

Duplo and Lego Sets

Kids usually outgrow their interest in Duplo and Lego sets. But think of all the kids who still love these childhood essentials. They’re in high demand, especially vintage complete sets that are no longer available in stores. Currently on Facebook Marketplace in Los Angeles, Duplo and Lego sets are selling for between $20 and $165.

Toys

This is a pretty broad category, but toys — particularly hard to find or trendy ones — can go for a lot at garage sales. These may be best sold in bulk. Right now, on Facebook Marketplace in Los Angeles, various toys are going for up to $50. (Hint, hint: “Star Wars” stuff appears to be highly sought after).

Power Tools

More and more people are joining the DIY movement, possibly driving up the demand for power tools. These items sold new can go for a lot of money, but even used ones can fetch a fair profit. These DIY essentials are currently listed on Facebook Marketplace in the Los Angeles area for up to $300.

Gardening Tools

Gardening tools are also in demand, particularly since the pandemic when many people sought to make the most of their spaces and develop new hobbies. You can get a pretty penny for gardening tools at garage sales. Looking at the Facebook Marketplace in Los Angeles, select gardening tools such as shovels and hoes sold in bundles have asking prices up to $150 — but one bundle is going for over $12,000.

Video Games and Video Game Accessories

In this digital, screen-filled age, many of us are practically addicted to video games. If you have any spare video game consoles, games or gaming accessories that function but you’re no longer using, sell them at your garage sale. One PS5 Slim console listed on Los Angeles’ Facebook Marketplace is listed for $380.

Vinyl Records

Vinyl records are no longer relics of the past as more and more hot artists release their albums on this medium. Vinyl records have actually outsold CDs in the past couple of years. If you have some vintage vinyl in good condition (check for scratches) you can get a pretty penny for them at your garage sale. How much you can fetch depends on what you’re selling and how rare the album is. But as an example, one Beatles collection vinyl album is going for $300 on Facebook marketplace in the L.A. area.

Exercise Equipment

Since the pandemic, more people are opting for working out at home over a gym membership. Working out at home is not only convenient, if you have the space, but it can save you money every month. If you have retired exercise equipment, sell it at your garage sale. Some treadmills on L.A.’s Facebook Marketplace are listed in the $180 ballpark.

Camping Gear

If you’re no longer using some old camping gear, sell it! A pop-up canopy on L.A.’s Facebook Marketplace is listed at $120. Even portable toilets are in demand.

Patio Furniture

‘Tis the season not only for garage sales but for hanging out on your deck, porch or patio. Patio furniture is highly in demand, and you can potentially get a lot of money selling your retired gems at your garage sale. A set in good shape could bring in $400 or thereabouts.
