The weather outside might be frightful this time of year, but with a high-quality coat, it doesn’t have to be. No matter the temperature—or if precipitation is on the radar—there are plenty of coats on the market that will keep you cozy and warm all season long. Heck, you likely already have one. After all, many coats are designed to be worn season after season. That said, if you like to dress with current styles in mind, we’re here to help.

So, what are we wearing? Subscribe to Reviewed’s weekly Style Check newsletter to get the answers from stylish people.

Ahead, find 10 winter coat trends—and coats that embody them—to consider for the frigid weeks and months ahead. If you think you’re exempt from needing a winter coat based on where you live? Think again. Even if you live in a moderate or hot climate, there’s always the chance that a cold-weather vacation will make its way onto your calendar.

1. Insulated quilt: Free People Pippa Packable Puffer

Designed to fit into your suitcase, this packable puffer is just right for your next winter trip.
Designed to fit into your suitcase, this packable puffer is just right for your next winter trip.

Whether you love to travel or you simply don’t like feeling weighed down, having a lightweight insulated quilted jacket is a must this season. While many retailers, including Athleta, lululemon and The North Face sell popular iterations of this winter coat trend, none stand out quite as much as the Free People Movement Pippa Packable Puffer.

Sold in 16 colors in sizes XS to XL, the feather-light, faux-down quilted jacket features a boxy silhouette that’s easy to layer over even the thickest sweaters (something many quilted jackets don’t account for). Best of all, it’s designed to be packable. The Pippa has a built-in pocket that it folds down into, at which point you can throw it in your backpack or use it as a travel pillow.

2. Robe silhouette: Apparis Mona Coat

Shop the Mona Coat for at-home levels of coziness with all the drama of a faux fur style.
Shop the Mona Coat for at-home levels of coziness with all the drama of a faux fur style.

While wearing a robe out of the house may earn you questionable looks (unless you live in a place like New York City), donning a robe-inspired coat will turn heads for all the right reasons. The trendy silhouette emerged on the runways thanks to designers like Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Coperni. Now, the style is making its way to the streets with its comfortable and ultra-convenient wrap style.

One of our favorite takes on the trend is the Apparis Mona Coat, which is a belted faux fur coat sold in three colors in sizes XXS to XXL. As beautiful as it is from the outside, the inside is just as wow-worthy with its bright rainbow lining.

3. Faux fur: Dressed in Lala Take Me To New York Faux Fur Coat

Make a bold statement in a patterned faux fur coat.

Speaking of faux fur, the animal-friendly textile is a trend in and of itself. In addition to being kind to animals (which is the most important benefit of the fabric), faux fur is often easier to clean than the real thing, not to mention much less expensive. One faux fur coat we can’t take our eyes off of is the Dressed in Lala Take Me To New York Faux Fur Coat, which takes trendiness to a whole new level with its bold checkerboard print. The only downside is that it’s only sold in sizes S to L, though, accommodating up to a size 10/12.

4. Plaid shacket: Good American Brushed Boyfriend Shacket

For warmer days, grab a shacket—a combination of a shirt and jacket—to stay cozy and cute.
For warmer days, grab a shacket—a combination of a shirt and jacket—to stay cozy and cute.

If it’s not frigid out—or even if it is, but you prefer to layer rather than relying on one large bulky coat—a shacket is an ideal choice. Short for shirt-jacket, this silhouette looks like a button-down shirt but has the weight of a light-to-medium jacket. While many stylish shackets exist, we’re currently swooning over the Good American Brushed Boyfriend Shacket thanks to its wide color and size assortment. Available in six colors (including a magenta option that is spot-on for 2023 given the Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta) in sizes XXS to 5XL, it’s quite simply the best (except for the fact that it’s recommended for dry cleaning only, despite being 100 percent polyester).

$165 at Good American

If you're looking for a more affordable option, the Savannah Buffalo Check Shacket from Buffalo Jeans is on sale for under $50 and comes in a classic black and white checkered pattern. Its fabric content includes 10% wool to keep you toasty warm this season.

5. Statement-making animal print: Asos Luxe Faux Fur Fitted Waist Maxi Coat in Zebra Print

Turn up the drama with a gorgeous maxi coat covered in a spicy animal print.
Turn up the drama with a gorgeous maxi coat covered in a spicy animal print.

This is the year of the statement coat and few textiles make as big of a splash as animal print—just ask Victoria Beckham, Bella Hadid, and Lady Gaga, all of whom have rocked the trend recently. As much as we love leopard and cheetah prints, this Asos Luxe Faux Fur Fitted Waist Maxi Coat in Zebra Print, sold in sizes 0 to 14, stopped us in our tracks. The floor-grazing coat is made from soft pink faux fur with bold brown zebra stripes and a wide collar.

6. Cozy-casual teddy bear: Alo Yoga Oversized Sherpa Trench

As cuddly as your childhood toys, the teddy bear coat trend is as hot as ever this year.
As cuddly as your childhood toys, the teddy bear coat trend is as hot as ever this year.

The comfy teddy coat trend has been around for the past few years but there’s no sign of it slowing down any time soon. The reason? Teddy coats are the ultimate casual, neutral coat—and they just so happen to feel like an extension of ultra-cozy at-home clothes. While many teddy coats exist, few earn as much praise as the Alo Yoga Oversized Sherpa Trench. Sold in camel, black, and ivory in sizes XXS to XL, the coat is designed with an open front to show off your outfit underneath, along with zippered pockets to keep your essentials safe while on the go.

7. Colorful leather: Texxa & Cole x Noize Penny Long Vegan Leather Coat

For a celeb-approved look, try a vegan leather jacket in vibrant colors.

Black leather will always be in style, but this year, brighter, bolder leather silhouettes are coming to light with celebrities, influencers, and everyday folks embracing the eye-catching trend. Whether you opt for a shamrock green leather trench à la Hailey Bieber or a patent red leather trench like fashion editor Bella Gerard, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have an extra pep in your step. To embrace the trend, consider the Tezza & Cole x Noize Penny Long Vegan Leather Coat. Embellished with a faux fur collar trim reminiscent of the ‘70s, the vintage-inspired coat is sold in tan and cobalt blue colorways in sizes XS to XL.

$284 at Noize

8. Double-breasted wool: Lane Bryant Faux-Wool Double-Breasted Coat

Double-breasted coats are another never-out-of-style silhouette, particularly for the office and slightly more reserved events. Although many, many double-breasted coats exist, we’re drawn to the above-the-knee Lane Bryant Faux-Wool Double-Breasted Coat, which is sold in camel, maroon, and black in petite and regular sizes 12 to 22.
