There’s a misconception that eating healthy is expensive. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, weekly shopping trips to Whole Foods are likely to get costly, but you can purchase healthy grocery items at Target for a fraction of the price.

Fresh Fruit

My home is always full of fresh fruit, from berries to apples and oranges. Fruit is a great alternative to highly processed snacks, and Target typically has low prices. For example, you can pick up a two-pound bag of organic gala apples for just $2.99, or you can get a two-pound bundle of bananas for $1.99.

Fresh Vegetables

Like fruits, fresh vegetables can be a great way to eat healthy without spoiling your budget. Plus, purchasing from the produce section instead of the canned or frozen aisles can also help you save money.

Veggies are great because they can be used for many recipes, helping avoid spoilage. You could buy a couple of bunches of kale to use in a smoothie, a salad, and even to make homemade kale chips.

Target offers some of the lowest prices for standard and organic vegetables.

Lentils

If you’re a vegetarian, many meals might consist of lentils as your source of protein. A one-pound bag of Good & Gather lentils costs just $1.59, significantly less expensive than adding a high-protein meat to your meal.

Oatmeal and Whole-Grain Cereals

If you enjoy starting your morning with a boal of oatmeal or cereal, Target has you covered. Avoid the high sugar cereals and look for anything made with whole grains. My favorite is to toss in some fresh berries. You can purchase a box of Multi-Grain Cheerios for as low as $3.99 per box. Plus, there are frequently Target Offers available to help you save additional money.

Herbal Tea

While I’m a coffee drinker first thing in the morning, I switch to herbal teas in the afternoon and evening. Target offers a huge selection of teas from brands like Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, and Yogi.

Almond Milk

For those of you who would prefer to use a plant based milk instead of traditional milk, Target has a great selection at competitive prices. Almond milk is a great alternative in your cereal, cup of coffee, or in other dishes you might be preparing. You can purchase a half gallon of Good & Gather almond milk for $2.59. If you prefer to stick with the major brands, Silk is just $2.99 for the same size.

Canned Beans

Canned beans are a great way to add things like protein, fiber, magnesium, or iron to your meals. What’s great is that they have such a long shelf life, so you can pick up a few cans and keep them in your pantry. Cans of Good & Gather organic beans for $1.29 or $0.89 for non-organic.
