7 easy Halloween treats under $5

Halloween is a fun and festive time of year for both kids and adults and an opportunity to get creative. But getting caught up trying to create the perfect haunted decorations and food from scratch can get pricey. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend $8.6 billion on Halloween this year – an all-time high.

Yahoo Finance spoke to Amanda Mushro, a lifestyle and parenting blogger and host of TLC’s webseries Life Hacks, to bring you some fun Halloween treats you can make for around $5 each.

Boo-nanas

Ingredients:
Medium bananas
White melting chocolate
Mini chocolate chips
Popsicle sticks

Directions:
1) Cut bananas in half so that you can make two Boo-nanas
2) Put Popsicle stick in the bottom of the banana
3) Freeze banana on wax paper for about 30 minutes
4) Melt chocolate in microwave for about 30 seconds
5) Use a spoon to cover the banana with the melted chocolate
6) Once covered, put two morsels on as eyes
7) Return the covered bananas to the wax paper and freeze again for about 30 minutes until ready to eat

Ingredients:
Granny Smith Apples
Peanut butter
Thin slices of strawberry
Yogurt-covered raisins
Edible eyes

Directions:
1) Cut your apples into four quarters
2) Cut out a thin slice from the middles of each quarter of the apple to create a mouth
3) Coat the inside of the cut gap with peanut butter (or any sticky spread to work as a “glue”)
4) Place yogurt-covered raisins on the top of the “mouth” for the teeth.
5) Place 1 sliced strawberry inside the mouth for the tongue
6) Use your spread to add each eye above the mouth

Ingredients:
Waffle pretzels
Green candy melts
M&M’s
Red sprinkles
Black icing

Directions:
1) Lay pretzels on a cookie sheet
2) Place chocolate melt on each pretzel and bake at 250 degrees for 4 minutes to soften (or you 3) can use the microwave for about 30 seconds)
4) Scatter red sprinkles on softened chocolate
5) Add M&M (with logo facing down)
6) Add a small dot of black icing to the M&M to create an eyeball
7) Let cool and harden

Ingredients:
Marshmallows
Lollipop sticks
Green candy melts
Chocolate morsels
Candy eyes
Black icing

Directions:
1) Skewer marshmallows with the lollipop sticks
2) Melt green candy melts in the microwave for about one minute
3) Dip the skewered marshmallows into the melted chocolate and cover completely
4) Attach edible eyes
5) Allow the chocolate to sit and dry for about 25 minutes
6) Use black icing to draw a mouth and decorate face as you please

Meatball Mummy

Ingredients:
Roll of prepared pizza dough
Cooked meatballs
Strands of raw spaghetti
Mozzarella cheese
Sliced black olive
Butter
Pizza sauce for serving

Directions:
1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2) Cut pizza dough into thin strips using pizza cutter
3) Thread three meatballs onto a strand of spaghetti so that they stay together
4) Wrap the pizza dough around the meatballs like a mummy (leave space for eyes)
5) Remove the spaghetti from middle of meatballs
6) Bake for 20-24 minutes
7) Spread melted butter over everything and attach edible eyes using melted cheese and a piece of olive

Spider Pie

Ingredients:
Boxed brownie mix
Oil
Eggs
Water
Cream cheese frosting

Directions:
1) Mix brownies according to box instructions in a round pan
2) Using a plastic sandwich bag or icing bag, use the cream cheese frosting to make circles around the pan working your way from the outside to the center
3) Fill in the center circle and use a knife to create a web by dragging the icing out
4) Bake according to the brownie box directions
5) Allow brownies to cool before adding plastic spiders

Mini Mummy Pizza

Ingredients:
English muffin
Block of mozzarella cheese
Pizza sauce
Sliced black olives

Directions:
1) On one half of an English muffin, put a spoonful of pizza sauce
2) Cut thin strips of mozzarella cheese and layer side to side
3) Use two olives as eyes
4) Bake in the oven or toaster oven until cheese is melted.
