Everyone is looking for a vehicle that is fuel efficient. After all, no one wants to watch the cost of gasoline go up while the amount in their wallet goes down. One of the best ways to save while at the pump is to make sure that you have a car with great gas mileage, which is particularly relevant if you are commuting over 50 miles each day. Whether it is to work, school, errands or just the daily go around town, that mileage can eat away at your fuel tank.

“For those who spend a significant portion of their day on the road, finding a fuel-efficient car is not just a matter of saving money — it’s about making a smart, long-term investment,” Joyce Gutierrez, automotive expert for 4WheelOnline, explained. “Commuters who travel over 50 miles daily face unique challenges, including increased fuel costs, more frequent maintenance and the need for a comfortable, reliable vehicle.”

GOBankingRates asked Gutierrez and several other automotive experts for their thoughts on the best fuel-efficient cars for commuting over 50 miles a day. Here were the top seven.

7. Honda Insight

“The Honda Insight is an excellent hybrid, offering around 52 miles per gallon (mpg) combined,” said Emil Sultanov, founder of Long Term Car.

“Known for its smooth and comfortable ride, the Insight combines a stylish design with advanced technology features, making your drive both efficient and enjoyable,” Sultanov added.

Plus, the Honda Insight’s competitive pricing and low running costs only sweeten the deal when it comes to drivers looking to save money all around on their car, not just for fuel efficiency.

6. Toyota Prius

“The 2024 Toyota Prius is excellent for long-distance commuters, boasting a future-forward, stylish and efficient design,” offered Gutierrez.

The Toyota Prius comes equipped with an impressive EPA estimate of 57 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway, making this hybrid vehicle significantly reduce fuel costs for those driving over 50 miles daily.

“Powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine, the Prius delivers a perfect balance of performance and efficiency,” Gutierrez continued. “Even the base model offers upscale features like a faux leather steering wheel, adding a touch of luxury to your daily drive.”

Sultanov stated that “Toyota’s reputation for reliability means fewer maintenance worries, making it an affordable long-term option.”

5. Hyundai Kona

“The 2024 Hyundai Kona is an outstanding option for individuals with substantial commuting needs, as it seamlessly integrates efficient performance with high comfort,” said Gutierrez, who also pointed out that the Kona’s modern appearance and sleek design looks good on the road and delivers impressive fuel economy.

“Boasting a fuel-economy rating of 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, this compact SUV ensures you’ll spend less time and money at the pump during your daily commute,” added Gutierrez. “[Plus,] one of Kona’s most notable improvements is its spacious interior, which provides ample room for passengers and cargo.” The added space enhances comfort during long drives, making your daily journey more enjoyable.

She continued, “The Hyundai Digital Key adds a layer of convenience, allowing you to use your smartphone as a key fob. For those who rely heavily on their devices during commutes, the wireless device charging feature ensures your gadgets stay powered up without cords.”

4. Toyota Corolla Hybrid

For those who prefer a traditional sedan, Sultanov suggested the Toyota Corolla Hybrid as a solid hybrid choice that has the combined fuel efficiency of around 52 mpg, more than enough to get someone through their daily commute of 50 miles.

“It offers the practicality of a compact car with the fuel savings of a hybrid,” shared Sultanov, who added that with reliability and low maintenance costs, the Corolla Hybrid is “…a sensible choice for budget-conscious commuters.”

3. Kia Soul

The 2024 Kia Soul is a highly commendable option for individuals with extensive daily commutes, offering a compelling fusion of efficiency and practicality, according to Gutierrez.

“Boasting an impressive fuel economy of 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, this vehicle is poised to reduce both time and monetary expenditure at the fueling station, catering ideally to those covering distances exceeding 50 miles per day,” Gutierrez said.

One of the Soul’s standout features in Gutierrez’s professional opinion is its Kia Drive Wise Driver Assist Technology, which enhances safety and reduces driver fatigue during extended journeys.

“This advanced system includes features like lane-keeping assist, forward collision avoidance and smart cruise control, all contributing to a more relaxed and secure driving experience,” Gutierrez said.

2. Hyundai Ioniq

Peter Dubois, general manager at Find by Plate, shined a light on the Hyundai Ioniq Blue (hybrid) for being “…not only stylish, but also perfect for [a] 50 miles and more daily commute.”

“With a fuel economy of over 680 miles on a single tank, this vehicle guarantees that you would have a comfortable ride and fewer fuel stops on your journey,” said Dubois.

Sultanov added, “Available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions, the Ioniq caters to different commuting needs. Its spacious interior and user-friendly technology enhance the comfort and convenience of long drives.”

“Also, the Ioniq Blue is well known for its low maintenance costs,” noted Dubois.

1. Honda Civic

“The 2024 Honda Civic emerges as an exceptional choice for individuals facing extensive daily commutes,” explained Gutierrez, adding that the Civic blends fuel efficiency and comfort. “The Civic exhibits exceptional fuel economy as one of its most impressive features, achieving 33 mpg in the city, 42 mpg on the highway and a combined 36 mpg. These figures translate to significant savings at the pump over time, especially those covering more than 50 miles daily.

“With its affordable price point and pleasant driving demeanor, the Civic is a smart investment for budget-conscious commuters,” Gutierrez remarked.
