Yahoo Finance 6 questions after part one of Casualty's Christmas special
Casualty spoilers follow.
Casualty aired the first part of its much-anticipated Christmas special tonight (December 4), and we've been left with a fair few questions in the aftermath.
Thankfully, the majority of these will be answered in next week's second instalment, airing on Saturday, December 11, but here's everything we've been left to ponder until then.
1. Is Charlie going to die?
Top of our list and undoubtedly the biggest question we've been left with tonight regards Charlie Fairhead's future on the show. Is Casualty about to kill off their long-suffering show stalwart? The good news is that the answer is a firm 'no'.
Despite his ominous turn for the worse at the end of tonight's episode, Charlie is still alive and kicking next week, as he endeavours to get to the bottom of what's going on with Laura and Rosie. However, with a cloud still looming regarding his ill health, is he on borrowed time? Well, luckily, we can answer that one for you as well...
2. And what does the future hold for him?
Charlie sparked concern with his behaviour tonight, and it soon became clear that the Covid crisis wasn't the only struggle he was facing.
Tess soon uncovered the reason behind Charlie's distraction when she overheard a radiologist asking Charlie to attend a second brain scan.
Charlies's symptoms – headaches, nausea, blurred vision – had left him fearing the worst, despite Tess's reassurance that they could simply be due to stress or exhaustion.
Sure enough, Charlie will get the results of his scan in the second part of the Christmas special next week, and he's relieved to learn that it's nothing too serious. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to viewers who have been watching this year, though, as Charlie is still going strong in real-time, a year later. Phew.
3. Will Iain be okay?
Iain is another character who was left in a very perilous situation tonight, having put his life on the line to rescue a young child. Sadly, his heroic attempts put him in near-mortal danger when the van he was tending to plunged over the edge of a ravine.
Although Iain managed to walk out relatively unscathed, his injuries soon caught up with him back in the ED where he collapsed.
Iain's Holby colleagues will rush to his aid in next week's episode, but much like Charlie, fans don't need to worry too much about Iain's fate. That's because, this episode aired in December 2020 and Iain went on to return to the ED in April of this year, with not a scratch on him.
As for why none of Iain's ED pals ever mentioned the frightful way in which he spent Christmas 2020 when he rejoined them earlier in the year? Well, that's a question for another time.
4. Will Rosie and the baby be okay?
Casualty took us even further back in time tonight, in order to revisit a story from 2006.
Pregnant HCA Rosie is the daughter of Laura Merriman, who brought Rosie into the ED fourteen years ago demanding treatment and ended up stabbing paramedic Josh Griffiths. She was revealed to be suffering from Factitious Disorder by Proxy (previously known as Munchausen's).
Now out of prison, Laura attempted to track her daughter down tonight, using a host of devious tactics to ensure she got Rosie alone.
Their showdown spiralled into disaster when Rosie ended up falling over the bannisters, merely weeks away from her due date. Will she and the baby be okay? We'll find out next week when this story will take more sinister turns...
5. Why is there tension between Charlie and Tess?
Charlie was thrown when Tess arrived back in Holby, having picked up ED shifts over the Christmas period. Suzanne Packer reprised her role as Tess for the two festive episodes.
But, despite their once-solid friendship, there was palpable tension between the pair. Is Charlie's ailing health to blame here? Or is there another reason why he's not-so-happy to see his old friend?
6. What happens next?
Next week's episode picks up from where tonight's left off and will explore the aftermath of Rosie and Iain's shock accidents.
The second part of the Christmas special will see Iain fight for his life, while Charlie and Tess make a shocking discovery about Laura – with devastating repercussions…
