Billie Eilish has broken numerous records since she put out her first E.P., don’t smile at me, when she was just 15 years old.

The “What Was I Made For” singer has one E.P. and two albums, as well as at least 30 singles, including those she’s made for movies like Barbie, Roma and No Time to Die. She became the second person — and the only woman — to sweep all four of the major Grammy Award categories at the 2020 show.

However, it isn't the awards that motivate Eilish, but producing music that her fans can relate to and see themselves in.

"I feel like I write so that people can think of it as theirs," she told RNZ radio in September 2017. "If my song is exactly about your life right now then it is — I don’t even want to say that it’s mine because it’s yours."

In her acceptance speech after she won best new artist in 2020, she echoed similar sentiments, giving her fans the credit for her success.

“Mainly, I think the fans deserve everything,” she said. “I feel like they have not been talked about enough tonight, because they’re the only reason any of us are here at all. So, thank you to the fans. You guys make this worth it.”

In 2022, Eilish became the youngest person to ever headline Coachella. She also became the second youngest person to win in her category for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards when she was 20 years old, and she is nominated once again alongside her brother, Finneas O’Connell, at the 2024 awards for her work on Barbie.

Certified gold, “ilomilo” was the seventh and last single off of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.

The song is about "losing somebody, or being afraid of losing somebody and it kind of being inevitable. It feels horrible and terrifying. Especially when you lose a person, it's a horrible feeling, so it's the feeling of being afraid,” Eilish said during a Verizon livestream in April 2020.

24. "all the good girls go to hell"

Though “all the good girls go to hell,” which is on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, seems to be about women that descend to Lucifer, the devil, on the surface, Eilish and O’Connell have said it is actually about climate change.

“If there were a God and a Devil, if you believe that there are, the idea that humans have made such a mess of the planet at this point that they’re both talking to each other like, ‘What’s going on? Why did they do all of this?’ That was an appealing concept,” O’Connell told Vulture.

The song is now certified platinum.

23. "i love you"

“I love you” is perhaps one of the more underrated tracks on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. A year after the album came out, Eilish shared that the song was inspired by many of her peers including Phoebe Bridgers, Post Malone and Bon Iver.

The melancholy song, which is certified platinum, tells the story of Eilish trying to resist her love for someone and telling them to not love her either. She performed as part of her Coachella set in 2019 and during the season premiere of Saturday Night Live in September of that year.

A classic pop track about boys who broke Eilish’s heart, “my boy” is a track off of don’t smile at me. With a sweet chorus but daunting lyrics in the verses, Eilish shares the story of a boy whose “being sus” and is a “pretty liar” because he “said he’d change,” but never does.

Though Eilish was less famous at the time the song and E.P. came out, “my boy” has since gone on to become certified platinum.

21. "xanny"

“Xanny” came out in March 2019 on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. The song, which is certified platinum, touches on drug use and how many people are Eilish were partaking and experiencing negative side effects, even death.

"They were Juuling, throwing up, drinking. Kept throwing up, kept drinking more," she told Paper in April 2019 of a specific night that inspired the song. "What was really weird to me was that nobody cared."

Another track off of Happier Than Ever, “NDA” spent 39 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The track is based off of Eilish’s experiences with fame and lack of privacy. She dealt with a number of stalkers after the address of her family home leaked in 2019, and in February 2021, she filed a restraining order against a man who camped outside her home, per E!.

“It’s not in my comfort zone and that’s fun to me,” Eilish said on Apple Music 1 in July 2021.

19. "my future"

The lead single off of Happier Than Ever, the song came out a year before the album in July 2020. It was one of the first songs to set the tone of the album to be a more positive one, with Eilish singing about how she’s found self-love and is looking forward to what’s to come.

The track also came out in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Eilish said she hoped it could give people some hope during difficult times.

“When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at — hopeful, excited and a craaaazy amount of self reflection and self growth,” she wrote in a statement to fans, per Pitchfork. “But recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what’s happening in the world now. I hope you can all find meaning in it for yourselves.”

A pre-cursor to 2023’s “What Was I Made For,” “my future” found its success on the Billboard charts for six weeks.

18. "Oxytocin"

“Oxytocin,” the last track to be written for Happier Than Ever, marked a stark contrast from Eilish’s past music. The young artist normally keeps talks about relationships private and only shares breakup or toxic situations stories in her lyrics. However, “Oxytocin,” — named for the hormone produced during sex — had a seductive element to it, with lyrics talking about sexuality and experimentation.

“Honestly, the images I have for Oxytocin were just sex. That’s it,” Eilish told The Guardian in July 2021 of what she thought of while creating the song. “All different kinds, and styles, and colors and locations. That’s really what was in my head. Sex.”

She added that the song came about because she wanted a track that would be “insane” live, she told Stylecaster the same month.

“Oxytocin” quickly became a fan favorite and one of her danciest songs yet. The song spent 72 songs on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

17. "COPYCAT"

Unlike most of the other songs on don’t smile at me, “COPYCAT” is more angry than sad, criticizing someone who mimics all of Eilish’s moves.

"I write with my brother mostly. That song, we were just in his room, and I was like, 'Yo! There's this f------ girl and she keeps doing everything that I do,’ ” Eilish told Genius of the story behind the lyrics in 2017. “And I want to write about it. Because it was in my mind."

Critics saw “COPYCAT” and its angry tone as a precursor for “bad guy,” exuding the same fed-up energy about someone who is irking Eilish. The song went platinum in the U.S. and remains one of her most iconic early songs.

The third single off of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, “bury a friend,” was written from the perspective of a monster under someone’s bed, Eilish told Rolling Stone in February 2019.

“Anything could be the monster — it could be someone you love so much that it’s taking over your life,” she said. ‘I think love and terror and hatred are all the same thing.”

Eilish included the song in both her album tours since its release after it spent 14 weeks on Billboard’s hot 100.

Another song off of Eilish’s E.P., “idontwannabeyouanymore” details her struggle with depression and difficulties accepting herself.

In a video explaining the lyrics of the song with Genius in 2018, Eilish admitted that she sometimes gets tired of being in her own body and mind.

“It’s so annoying to feel like this all the time, all the time,” she said. “If someone is like, ‘Oh God, you fall apart so much. You’re so annoying. You’re always f------ sad.’ I’m like, ‘I know. I have to be in this bitch all the time. I’m aware of how annoying it is.’ ”

14. "No Time To Die"

The Oscar-winning song for 2021’s James Bond film No Time To Die made Eilish the youngest-ever artist to record a song for the franchise. The song won a slew of awards in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, including a Grammy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics’ Choice.

Hans Zimmer, the film’s composer, chose Eilish and O’Connell's song after hearing a number of options. However, once he heard their version, he knew it was the one.

“That’s the vibe. That’s the everything,” he told Vulture in October 2021. “It’s a perfect movie song: In its quietness, somehow, you have a huge landscape in front of you.”

13. "Lost Cause"

Following “Therefore I Am,” Eilish released more singles off her second studio album ahead of its release. “Lost Cause” was released in June 2021 and positioned Eilish in a better headspace than her past music, showing off the similar confident energy on “Therefore I Am.”

In the song, Eilish sings about a partner who she deemed a “lost cause,” pointing out their unemployment and emotional immaturity. The music video for the song featured Eilish hosting a giant slumber party with a number of women in matching outfits dancing around and playing with water guns and the game Twister.

The song spent 27 weeks on U.S. Billboard’s Hot 100.

12. "Therefore I Am"

Released in November 2020, “Therefore I Am” is an uptempo, hip-hop-inspired pop song that sees Eilish in a bit more of a self-assured attitude, singing, “I’m not your friend or anything, damn/You think that you’re the man/I think, therefore, I am.”

“Yeah, it’s a little mean. I love it,” Eilish told Lowe on Apple Music 1 when the song came out. “It was very fun to complete. It was fun to record, especially because it’s like… I feel like you can hear it. I feel that I sound very much like… I’m just f------ around.”

Eilish included the song on her 2022-2023 Happier Than Ever world tour.

11. "you should see me in a crown"

The lead single of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? featured a new trap-influenced electropop sound for Eilish. While most of her previous music was softer and more emotional, “you should see me in a crown” was almost a menacingly abrasive sound that sees Eilish in a position of power.

The lyrics were inspired by a scene in an episode of BBC’s Sherlock when villain Jim Moriarty says the line "Honey, you should see me in a crown.”

“I just want it to sound like, if you heard it in a dark room, it’d be f—-- scary,” Eilish told Billboard in November 2018. “So terrifying…but that’s the goal, is to freak everybody out. My songs have in the past just been sad, and more sad and some more sad and so to write a song that’s kind of almost empowering, that was not even something I ever thought of doing or wanted to do, even.”

“You should see me in a crown” is certified two times platinum and charted on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 41 weeks.

10. "Six Feet Under"

Like “ocean eyes,” “Six Feet Under” was also one of Eilish’s first singles that she originally released on SoundCloud in 2016. The somber pop ballad helped propel Eilish to fame and became certified gold.

Shortly after the song came out, Eilish put out a homemade music video that her mom, Maggie Baird, edited. “Six Feet Under” was featured in season 9 of American Horror Story.

9. "bellyache"

Eilish often plays fictionalized characters and stories in the lyrics of her songs and “bellyache” is the perfect example of her creativity. In the 2017 song, she takes on the persona of a psychopath who gets a bellyache after killing her friends and loved ones.

“We kind of just became this character that knows they're out of their mind, but also doesn't at the same time,” Eilish told Paper of the songwriting process in March 2017. “We have a bunch of songs that are like that. You don't always have to feel the way you are while singing.”

8. "& burn"

The 2017 song off of don’t smile at me is the hip-hop remix of the original “watch.” Featuring Vince Staples, Eilish and O’Connell originally the wrote song as “watch & burn” but split it into two versions, the Grammy winner told the Fader in December 2017 over email.

“​​This version felt like it would be perfect with someone as a feature,” she wrote. “Vince Staples was my NUMBER 1 choice, so when we got him to hear it and he agreed to do, it was incredible and the verse he did is so mf good!”

“& burn” is certified gold in the U.S. for selling over 500,000 units.

7. "lovely (with Khalid)"

Eilish’s first collaboration with pop singer Khalid was one of her earliest forays into making music for TV and films, appearing as the lead single off of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why season 2 soundtrack in 2018. It ultimately made the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 list for 64 weeks.

The lyrics recount Eilish and Khalid struggling to overcome serious depression together. It was later added to the extended version of Eilish’s E.P. don’t smile at me.

6. "Ocean Eyes"

“Ocean eyes” was one of Eilish’s first songs ever, released shortly before her 14th birthday on SoundCloud. O’Connell originally wrote and produced it for his band at the time but gave it to Eilish, thinking it was better suited for her vocals.

“He told me he thought it would sound really good in my voice,” she told Teen Vogue in February 2017. “He taught me the song and we sang it together along to his guitar and I loved it — it was stuck in my head for weeks.”

The song catapulted Eilish to fame almost immediately after it went viral on SoundCloud. It spent 84 weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and is still one of the artist’s most streamed songs on Spotify, with over 1 billion streams.

5. "everything i wanted"

A standalone single that was released in November 2019, “everything i wanted” was later added to the deluxe version of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. The song was inspired by a nightmare Eilish had involving thoughts of suicidal ideation.

When she approached O’Connell to help her write the song, he initially was hesitant because he was worried about her depression. However, Eilish ultimately convinced him by explaining that the song was her way of expressing herself in a safe way, she told The New York Times Magazine in March 2020.

“everything i wanted” earned Eilish her second song of the year Grammy in a row as she took home the prize again in 2021. It also stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 23 weeks and is certified three times platinum.

4. "bad guy"

“bad guy” was an immediate hit off of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? when it was released in March 2019. The song was more energetic than much of Eilish’s music and, in the lyrics, she taunts a man for being a “bad guy” even though she’s tougher than him.

The accompanying music video saw Eilish sitting on a man while he did push-ups and taunting another man in other scenes. The bravado and dance-pop melody appealed to fans and earned her two of her four Grammys in 2020, for record of the year and song of the year.

Eilish later released a version of the song that features her longtime music idol Justin Bieber that July.

3. "What Was I Made For?"

Eilish’s heartbreaking song for 2023’s Barbie earned her her second Oscar nomination in 2024. The track plays at a pivotal moment in the movie when Barbie questions what her purpose is.

Once again, Eilish teamed up with her brother and this time, director Greta Gerwig, to write the ballad. She told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe in July 2023 that the song came about after a period of writer’s block for her and O’Connell.

The singer added that she put herself in the perspective of the character, rather than herself, which helped inspire her writing.

“I did not think about myself once in the writing process,” she said. “I was purely inspired by this movie and this character and the way I thought she would feel, and wrote about that.”

2. "Happier Than Ever"

“Happier Than Ever,” the sixth single of Eilish’s second studio album of the same name, was an instant hit when it came out in July 2021. Critics lauded it as one of her best songs ever, citing its gradual crescendo from a soft pop song to an all-out emo rock song by the end.

The song started from a lyric about a situation Eilish was going through: “When I’m away from you, I’m happier than ever,” O’Connell told Billboard in December 2021.

Eilish told NPR the day after the song was released that it was one of the “most important songs” she’d ever written because she felt like she could finally put how she was feeling into words.

“You don't really know what you want to say or how to say it — and then maybe you have a conversation with somebody else, or you think a little bit about it, and you figure out what it is you've been trying to say for this entire period of time? That's how it felt,” she said.

The song was ultimately nominated for four Grammys in 2022 and won song of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards. It's also been streamed over a billion times on Spotify.

One of the lead singles off of Eilish’s debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, “when the party’s over” was released in October 2018, before the pop star had even turned 17. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a breakup that her brother experienced.

O’Connell told Vulture the inspiration for the song came during a drive back from a girl’s house in Los Angeles after ending things with her. He added that the song, which is a bare-bones piano ballad that sounds almost hymnal, was inspired by choral music as he and his sister grew up singing in a church choir.

“When the party’s over” spent 29 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and went four times platinum in the U.S. with over 4 million certified unit sales. On Spotify, it has over 1.5 billion streams to date.
