2025 Toyota GR86 Brings Hakone Edition Back with More Performance

GR86 Hakone Edition Is Back with More PerformanceToyota
  • Following a limited run in 2020, Toyota is bringing back the Hakone edition of the GR86 sports car for 2025.

  • The special edition adds a Performance pack with Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes, matching last year's Trueno edition.

  • Production of the Hakone edition is limited to 860 units in the United States, with Toyota expecting all trim levels to go on sale in the fall.

Nope, this isn't some sort of Saint Patrick's Day special; it's actually the second coming of the Toyota GR86 Hakone special edition. Following a limited run in 2020, Toyota is bringing the Hakone edition of its lightweight sports car back for 2025. It follows last year's Trueno edition with the addition of a Performance package with upgraded dampers and brakes.

Just as in 2020, the Hakone edition is finished in a beautiful shade of green, which on this model is called Ridge Green. While the first Hakone edition featured a glossy look, the reimagined version tones things down with a much flatter paint. A set of 18-inch satin bronze wheels and the color-matched ducktail spoiler at the rear finish off the look. Inside the car, the Hakone earns tan leather trim and a special-edition shift knob with bronze accents.

The special edition is built on the 86's Premium trim and can be ordered with either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the optional six-speed automatic. The Hakone comes equipped with the same Performance Pack that was introduced with last year's Trueno edition. The pack adds Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes that feature larger-diameter rotors than the standard car.

The Hakone isn't alone in increased sportiness. Toyota also retuned the shock absorbers and electric power steering across the GR86 lineup to help liven up the lightweight model. Reworked throttle mapping and revamped torque control should make rev-matching easier and improve throttle response on 2025 models with the standard manual transmission.

Toyota hasn't yet released pricing for the 2024 GR86 and its new options, but we expect to find out more before it goes on sale later this year.

Production for the special edition is limited to just 860 units in the United States. Toyota hasn't released pricing info on the Hakone edition or any other 2025 GR86 models, though we expect to receive that information before they go on sale this fall.
