The 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance Is Mad With Power
Mercedes-AMG's new hybrid powertrain is a remarkable thing, pairing either an inline-four or V-8 up front with a battery and electric motor mounted at the rear for big power. It's the same basic powertrain found in the AMG GT 63 S E Performance and the new S63 E Performance. The same hybrid system is also paired with a turbocharged four-cylinder in the new C63 S E Performance and GLC 63 S E Performance.
The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 makes 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque on its own—greater than the standard SL63's 577 hp and 590 lb-ft—and mates with a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission. At the rear axle, a 400-volt, 6.1-kWh battery powers an electric motor that offers a continuous output of 94 hp and a peak of 201 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. The torque figure is actually higher than the combined outputs of the engine and motor because the motor is connected with its own two-speed gearbox. As with all of these new AMG hybrids, 4Matic+ fully variable all-wheel drive is standard.
There are no fewer than eight drive modes encompassing the usual Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, and Individual in addition to hybrid-specific Electric and Battery Hold. The car also has an additional four regenerative-braking settings that dictate how much power is put back into the battery when you lift off the throttle or hit the brake pedal. The options are mind-boggling.
Like the non-hybrid SL63, the S E Performance gets a unique hydraulically controlled active anti-roll system, adaptive dampers, and rear-wheel steering. Also standard are carbon-ceramic brake discs, which is a good thing because one assumes this car is very heavy. The active aerodynamic devices of the SL were tweaked for this ultimate performance version, too.
Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph sprint of just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph. Those figures just about match Porsche's claims for the 911 Turbo and Turbo S cabriolet, the SL's most obvious rival.
We're still waiting on pricing and some specs. Notably, Mercedes hasn't released a weight figure for the car yet. The non-hybrid SL63 weighs in at 4305 pounds, and a GT63 S E Performance with the same hybrid system was measured by Autocar at over 650 pounds more than its non-hybrid counterpart. So, figure a curb weight of nearly 5000 pounds for this roadster. As for pricing, a 2023 SL63 costs $184,150, so we wouldn't be surprised to see this hybrid break the $200,000 barrier.
