2024 Ford Capri Adds Two Doors, Electric Power

2024 Ford Capri Adds Two Doors, Electric PowerFord
  • The Ford Capri is back! Just not how you remember it.

  • The two-door coupe that Ford sold from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s returns as a mid-sized electric crossover on the VW Group's MEB platform.

  • The base car features RWD and a single electric motor generating 282 horsepower, while a dual-motor AWD version makes 335 horsepower.

Unless you're old enough to have watched Vito Corleone's funeral in theaters, you probably don't remember the Ford Capri in its original glory. If you are old enough to remember the Capri of 1970s and 1980s fame, you're likely scratching your head wondering how on Earth the car pictured above is a Capri. Rather than a two-door coupe intended as a European pony car, the 2024 Capri is a mid-size electric crossover built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform along with the Europe-market Explorer EV.

Picture the electric Explorer as Ford's version of the ID.4 crossover, while the Capri joins the lineup as Ford's take on the quasi-coupe ID.5. From a styling perspective, the Capri is a mixed bag. It's not particularly engaging to look at, nor is it offensive. From the side profile, the flat roof and angular hips are highly reminiscent of the Polestar 2 sedan.

Available in Two Trims

Because nothing is ever simple, there will be two models when the Capri launches in the U.K., and both will be designated "Extended Range." The base version is a 282-horsepower single-motor rear-wheel drive model with a reported 390 miles of range according to Europe's WLTP test. It's equipped with a 77-kWh battery pack and can charge from 10-80 percent in 28 minutes.

The Premium version adds a second electric motor, making it all-wheel-drive and bringing the horsepower figure up to 335 ponies. The usable capacity of the battery increases slightly to 79 kWh and the maximum charging power increases to 185 kW (compared to 135), bringing the 10-80 percent charging speed down to 26 minutes. Despite the slightly larger battery, the additional motor brings the maximum range of the Premium model to 368 miles. Zero to 62 mph is set to take 6.4 seconds in the less powerful model, while the Premium accomplishes the same task in 5.3 seconds.

In addition to the beefier powertrain, stepping up to the Premium trim adds a number of amenities. The cabin is upgraded with ambient lighting, and a B&O sound system, while outside the car, Ford adds a hands-free tailgate. The standard 19-inch alloys are also swapped for a set of 20-inchers, though both models will be able to choose a set of 21-inch wheels.

Unsurprisingly, the Capri's interior takes a lot of inspiration from the electric Explorer. A 14.6-inch vertical touchscreen slides to reveal a "secret" storage compartment with the front armrest hiding a 0.6 cubic ft. "MegaConsole."

While we won't be getting the Capri stateside, it's set to be built in Cologne, Germany. United Kingdom pricing for the standard model starts at $61,731 based on current exchange rates, while the Premium trim brings the total to $66,995.
