2019’s Most Successful Movies (So Far)

“Avengers: Endgame” somehow managed to defy expectations over the weekend, becoming the latest entry in the billion-dollar movie franchise to set a new office record with an other-worldly $350 million debut. Although many of the year’s most anticipated films have yet to be released (such as “The Lion King” and “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu”), quite a few have already passed the $100 million gross mark. Take a look at the highest-grossing movies of 2019, including movies that were completely panned by critics.

20. 'Dragon Ball Super: Broly'

  • Total domestic gross: $30.71 million

  • Production budget: $8.5 million

“Dragon Ball Super: Broly” came out on Jan. 16, 2019, and it’s become the third-highest grossing anime movie of all time, behind “Pokemon: The Movie 2000” (2000) and “Pokemon: The First Movie” (1999).

19. 'Cold Pursuit'

  • Total domestic gross: $32.13 million

  • Production budget: Estimated $80 million

This action drama starring Liam Neeson, Emmy Rossum and Laura Dern was the No. 3 movie on its opening weekend, pulling in $11.03 million. It’s Neeson’s worst opening since 2010’s “The Darkman,” The Wrap reported.

18. 'A Dog's Way Home'

  • Total domestic gross: $42 million

  • Production budget: $18 million

Released on Jan. 11, 2019, this family adventure movie starring Ashley Judd and Edward James Olmos ended up earning $75.46 worldwide — which isn’t bad considering it cost less than a quarter of that to produce.

 

17. 'Pet Sematary'

  • Total domestic gross: $52.61 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $21 million

The 2019 remake of this horror classic is the sixth-highest grossing Stephen King movie to date. The top-grossing Stephen King movie of all time remains 2017’s “It,” which grossed $327.48 million.

16. 'Wonder Park'

  • Total domestic gross: $44.95 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $100 million

Released on March 15, 2019, this animated film was voiced by an all-star cast that includes Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner and Mila Kunis. “Wonder Park” was the No. 2 movie its opening weekend, grossing $15.85 million.

15. 'Five Feet Apart'

  • Total domestic gross: $45.25 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $7 million

Despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%, this teen romance is one of the top-grossing films of the year. It stars Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse as cystic fibrosis patients who develop a romantic connection despite not being able to touch.

14. 'Isn't It Romantic'

  • Total domestic gross: $48.69 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $31 million

This romantic comedy — that mocks romantic comedies — starring Rebel Wilson opened Valentine’s Day weekend, and it grossed $14.25 million. Fox took a gamble on making a rom-com in an age when superhero movies typically own the box office after seeing the success of “Crazy Rich Asians,” The Wrap reported.

13. 'What Men Want'

  • Total domestic gross: $54.61 million

  • Production budget: $20 million

Taraji P. Henson stars in the gender-flipped remake of 2000’s “What Women Want” — but it failed to live up to its predecessor’s box office sales. The aforementioned Mel Gibson comedy grossed $182.81 million domestically and $191.3 million abroad, while the 2019 remake grossed $54.61 million domestically and $17.17 million abroad.

12. 'Escape Room'

  • Total domestic gross: $57 million

  • Production budget: $9 million

Talk about a return on investment — “Escape Room” racked up $154 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Not too shabby for a film that cost less than $10 million to make.

11. 'Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral'

  • Total domestic gross: $73.04 million (as of April 25, 2019)

  • Production budget: Estimated $20 million

Tyler Perry’s Madea franchise has been a goldmine for the filmmaker — the nine films have grossed an average of $63.28 million each, for a total of $569.50 million. “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” is the third-highest grossing film in the franchise to date.

10. 'Alita: Battle Angel'

  • Total domestic gross: $85.61 million (as of April 25, 2019)

  • Production budget: $170 million

This action-adventure film was released on Valentine’s Day 2019 and was the No. 1 movie its opening weekend. It grossed $28.53 million that weekend alone and has gone on to rack up a whopping $404.34 million worldwide.

9. 'Dumbo'

  • Total domestic gross: $107 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $170 million

The Disney live-action re-imagining of the 1941 classic film “Dumbo” opened on March 29, 2019, and was the No. 1 movie its opening weekend. The film received an A- Cinemascore from audiences despite mixed reviews from critics, The Wrap reported. Directed by Tim Burton, it stars Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton.

8. 'Shazam!'

  • Total domestic gross: $131.15 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $100 million

The superhero comedy starring Zachary Levi exceeded box office expectations for its opening weekend performance, grossing an estimated $53.4 million. It remained the No. 1 movie in theaters two weekends in a row.

7. 'The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part'

  • Total domestic gross: $105.63 million (as of April 25, 2019)

  • Production budget: $99 million (estimate)

The four LEGO movies have grossed nearly $600 million at the box office, and “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” is currently the third-most successful film of the franchise. Its gross is still far behind that of the original “LEGO Movie,” which made $257.76 million domestically.

6. 'The Upside'

  • Total domestic gross: $108.18 million (as of April 25, 2019)

  • Production budget: $37.5 million

“The Upside” dethroned “Aquaman’s” four-week fixture in the No. 1 spot when it debuted in January. The comedy starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston is a remake of the popular French film “The Intouchables” (2011).

5. 'Glass'

  • Total domestic gross: $111.04 million

  • Production budget: $20 million

M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” kept the No. 1 spot for three weeks in a row following its release on Jan. 18, 2019, including over Super Bowl weekend which is a historically bad weekend for the box office. The thriller — which stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Sarah Paulson — has grossed $246.94 million worldwide.

4. 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World'

  • Total domestic gross: $159.69 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $129 million

“How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World” is the third movie in the “How to Train Your Dragon” series. The first film, released in 2010, grossed $217.58 million, and “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” released in 2014, grossed $177 million.

3. 'Us'

  • Total domestic gross: $172.84 million (as of April 28, 2019)

  • Production budget: $20 million

Jordan Peele’s “Us” is currently the fourth-highest grossing R-rated horror movie of all time, falling behind his previous film, “Get Out” (2017), which grossed $176.04 million domestically. “The Exorcist” (1973), which grossed $232.91 million, and “It” (2017), which grossed $327.48 million, hold the top two spots.

2. 'Avengers: Endgame'

The highly anticipated “Avengers: Endgame” smashed box office records over its opening weekend, beating out many analysts’ predictions with a stunning $1.2 billion worldwide debut. It became the only film to ever gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office for its debut. The four “Avengers” films have now racked up a total of $6.18 billion worldwide.

  • Production budget: $150 million (estimate)

Brie Larson stars as Captain Marvel in the latest Marvel Comics movie. It’s currently the fifth-highest grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — “Black Panther” (2018) remains in the top spot with a gross of $700.06 million at the U.S. box office. However, it did shatter records as the biggest worldwide opening for a female-fronted film, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
