2 police officers injured while trying to arrest impaired driver in Kansas City

Two officers were injured while trying to arrest an impaired driver who tried fleeing police Saturday in Kansas City.

Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, officers were trying to arrest an impaired person driving a Cadillac CT5 near East 44th Street and Flora Avenue, but the driver refused to exit his vehicle, said Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver tried to flee the scene, and when he did, he “sideswiped” a Nissan Sentra that was parked nearby and then hit a Ford Escape head-on, Drake said.

As the Cadillac took off, two officers who had been trying to get the driver out of the car were dragged with it. One officer fell on the ground before the Cadillac hit the Nissan, Drake said. He had minor injuries.

The second officer was still hanging on to the passenger side of the Cadillac when it hit the Ford, Drake said. That officer was hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The man driving the Cadillac was hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening, Drake said.

The driver of the Ford Escape fled the scene, said police, who determined the person was driving a stolen vehicle.
