UPDATE 1-Russia's Rostec says ready to boost germanium output for domestic market

MOSCOW, July 5 (Reuters) - Russia is ready to boost output of germanium used in the semiconductor and defence industries to meet domestic demand after China announced curbs on exports, state conglomerate Rostec said on Wednesday.

China on Monday imposed controls which require exporters to seek permission to export some gallium and germanium products, citing national security interests.

China is the world's top producer of both products and the move triggered concern among international consumers.

The Rostec's Shvabe Holding can produce up to 20 metric tons of germanium annually and is currently running at 30% of production capacity, Rostec told Reuters.

"If foreign supplies are restricted and domestic demand grows, (we are) ready to increase production and cover the needs of domestic consumers in Russia," it added.

The Chinese restrictions are also likely to speed up a separate project by Shvabe to produce high-purity germanium, Rostec said, adding that its main task was to meet the needs of Russia's domestic market.

Russia also has gallium producers including aluminium producer Rusal.

The company told Reuters that one of its alumina plants is able to produce 6 metric tons of gallium a year, but it declined to disclose the current output or destination of supply.

In neighbouring Kazakhstan, a spokeswoman for the Kazakh unit of Eurasian Resources Group said it had no gallium production at the moment.

An alumina refinery in Ukraine used to produce gallium, but its operations were suspended in 2022 after the start of what Russia calls its special military operation in Ukraine.
