Sobeys, Canada’s second-largest national grocery chain, started in rural Nova Scotia as a food delivery cart. The first store opened in 1924, and within 15 years the Sobey family had six stores. From those humble beginnings, the Empire Company Limited subsidiary now operates 1,500 corporate or franchised stores under a number of banners in all 10 provinces, employing more than 125,000 people. In 2015 its fiscal revenue was $23.9 billion.
