Canada’s tallest building is coming in 2018

Canada’s tallest building is going to measure just over 340 metres high and feature cutting-edge architecture, impressive residential units and plenty of retail space. It’s set to open in the Yonge and Bloor area of Toronto two years from now.

It’s called The One. Local Toronto firm Mizrahi Developments, a company that has built custom homes in the city’s upscale Forest Hill area among other impressive developments, is behind the project. The breathtaking concept photos prove there will be no holding back when it comes to the amazing features of this building.

Any new residential building that goes up in one of the busiest areas in Canada is going to have to serve several key purposes. Here are some of the features The One has to offer:

- A wind-shielded, treed terrace.

- 84 stories of residential space, featuring 416 units.

- Three floors of restaurant space.

- Access to the city’s underground PATH system for easy access to retail shopping and the TTC subway system.

- Room for a possible cultural facility on the eighth floor.

- Room for eight luxurious penthouse suites on the top four floors.

- Connections to pre-existing retail outlets on the ground level and space for new retail outlets that haven’t been built yet.

As you can see in the photos, the exterior of the building features a detailed diamond-like design that runs all the way up the building. Transparent glass elevators on the west side of the building that are protected by a perforated metal screen create a gorgeous quasi see-through effect that will catch people’s eyes as they pass by.

If there is one glaring drawback to the whole development, it’s the parking space, which always comes at a premium in any major city. Originally, The One was supposed to have room for over 600 vehicles. That number is being cut in half as there is only space for four levels of parking instead of the original eight levels that was originally going to be available underground.

Still, the most up-to-date design of Canada’s future tallest building dwarfs other structures across the country both in height and in style. Not including the CN Tower, which is more tourist attraction than day-to-day work or living space, the tallest building in the country is currently First Canadian Place Building, which resides close to Toronto’s Union Station. The next seven tallest buildings in Canada will all reside in Alberta, with Edmonton’s Stantec Tower being the tallest building outside of Ontario. It will reach a height of 251 metres and is also scheduled to be completed in 2018 in the city’s Ice District.
