While shareholders of Wesdome Gold Mines (TSE:WDO) are in the black over 5 years, those who bought a week ago aren't so fortunate

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For instance, the price of Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSE:WDO) stock is up an impressive 111% over the last five years. Then again, the 8.4% share price decline hasn't been so fun for shareholders.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

Wesdome Gold Mines isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

For the last half decade, Wesdome Gold Mines can boast revenue growth at a rate of 18% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 16% per year, compound, during the period. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. To our minds that makes Wesdome Gold Mines worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Wesdome Gold Mines shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 14% over one year.
