Why scientists are ‘toilet-training’ cows

Scientists from New Zealand and Germany have designed a new program to help stop cow urine from contaminating soil and waterways.

The training program rewards cows with food for urinating in special pens called “MooLoos.” If they relieve themselves elsewhere, they get a squirt of cold water. The researchers say collecting just ten to 20 per cent of cow urinations would make a significant difference to the environment.

Tom Rand, author of the book Climate Capitalism, says the program underscores the unsustainable realities of the beef industry. His venture capital firm has invested in a lab-grown meat company looking to develop a satisfying and environmentally-friendly alternative for consumers.
