Trudeau wins third term, 6K evacuated from Spain amid volcanic eruption, European court blames Russia for ex-KGB officer death

AKIKO FUJITA: In our "World View" today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has won a third term in office, but he'll face plenty of opposition in parliament. His Liberal Party fell short of winning an outright majority in the snap election Monday, winning just 156 seats. The liberals lost the parliamentary majority back in 2019, but Trudeau took a gamble this time, calling an election two years earlier than scheduled, arguing he needed a stronger mandate. In his speech, Trudeau acknowledged the disappointing results, but vowed to carry out some key campaign promises, including additional fiscal stimulus and a vaccine mandate for all federal workers.

More evacuations in Spain, as volcanic eruption continues to engulf the town of La Palma in the Canary Islands. 6,000 people have been evacuated, more than 160 homes destroyed so far. Families were given just one hour to pick up their bags and leave, with the lava moving in on their homes and pouring into the swimming pool of at least one home. Officials warn the lava could create a cloud of toxic gas and lead to greater explosions if it reaches the ocean. This is the archipelago's first eruption in 50 years, and experts say it could last for weeks or even months.

And the European Court of Human Rights says Russia is firmly responsible for the poisoning death of an ex-KGB officer in London. Alexander Litvinenko died in 2006, weeks after drinking green tea that was laced with a rare radioactive substance. Britain has long blamed Russia for the killing, saying Litvinenko was targeted for speaking out against the Kremlin. A Kremlin spokesperson called the European Court ruling idiotic, and said it was damaging the court's reputation. Also on Tuesday, British police said a third Russian has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of another former Russian double agent back in 2018, adding that all three suspects were military intelligence operatives.
