Stocks trade mixed at the open as earnings week wraps up

Yahoo Finance Live’s Brad Smith breaks down how stocks are trading following the opening bell on Friday.

Video Transcript

- OK. Well, eventually, the market screen is gonna load up here for me. I was trying to stall there for a hot second.

But as we're taking a look-- and we've got them in the bottom corner of your screen there. So you can take a look at it. Here, let me just opt on over to a different view here so that we can ultimately take a look at the S&P 500, at least get you a look at how that's doing.

The S&P 500 here on the day, you're seeing it flat, just barely to the upside, opening in the green as of right now. But we'll see if we hold on to those gains here-- some slim moves higher up by about one point right now. And you're taking a look at the 11 S&P 500 sectors.

As of right now, you've got more gainers than decliners, really led by Staples right now, 9/10 of a percent in positive territory. But bringing up the caboose, you've got XLF-- you know what that means, financial sector. That is in the red right now by about 6/10 of a percent.

Technology, that down by about half a percent-- we're gonna get some big earnings on the technology front next week. And we're gonna be breaking down many of them during "After the Call"-- yes, a subtle tease there.

Also, taking a look at XLY-- you're seeing that higher on the day by about 9/10 of a percent out of the gate this morning. I want to take a look at the tech-heavy NASDAQ, just paint a little bit of a picture for you as to where those megacap tech stocks are moving out of the gate this morning.

And on this, the final trading session of the week, Apple, Microsoft, both of those in the red. Google, Alphabet, Alphagoogle, whatever you call them, in the green. And Amazon-- ooh, interesting. It's up by about 2.6% on the day. So we'll continue to track that.

And then, just lastly here, I wanted to take a look at the-- well, I could have pulled it up right there, but Tesla, anyway, on the day, as long as we got it. There we go. OK, Tesla, you're seeing that up by about 1/10 of a percent.

And let's just put this broader kind of move in context that we've seen over the course of this week. And you can see exactly when they reported earnings. Yeah, that was-- well, we don't need to draw it, you can see it-- ultimately, here over the past five days, down 11% this week for the electric vehicle maker postearnings. That kind of shocked analysts and the Street out there.

- Seeing that Amazon move upward prompted me to try and figure out what was going on there.

- What's up?

- And I'm seeing a note out of JPMorgan that Amazon is the company's best internet idea--

- Oh.

- --into the reporting season for big tech, which is quite interesting there. So we'll keep digging into that. But that seems to be the catalyst behind today's move.

- Super original. Yeah.

- Hey, you know, you got to pick something.

- Yeah.

- All right.
