Stocks decline at the open, tech sector the lone gainer

Yahoo Finance Live’s Brad Smith breaks down how stocks are moving after the opening bell.

Video Transcript

JULIE HYMAN: Brad, what do you got over there at the Interactive? What are you seeing?

BRAD SMITH: I've got the lower market that you mentioned a moment ago there. The Dow Jones Industrial Average right now down triple digits to start the day. We're seeing declines of about 3/10 of a percent there. About the same on a percentage basis for the NASDAQ Composite. Past three days, though, still net higher by a little more than half a percent. S&P 500, you're seeing that lower by about half a percent, but still this week net positive by about 2/10 of a percent there.

Let's take a look here at some of the 11 S&P 500 sectors as we begin today's trading activity and pulling up those 11 sectors here for you right now. We are largely in the red. XLK, technology the lone gainer right now. The lone ranger in the green, if you will. That's up by about a quarter of a percent.

But bringing up the caboose you've got communications services, XLC, down 1 and 1/2% here. So 10 out of 11 S&P 500 sectors in the red to start the day.
