Smoke Plume Rises From St Vincent Volcano on Anniversary of 1979 Eruption

Scientists monitoring the La Soufriere volcano on the Caribbean island of St Vincent witnessed large plumes of smoke rising into the sky in what they described as “another explosive episode” on April 13, the 42nd anniversary of its 1979 eruption.

This footage, released by the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center, shows the volcanic activity.

The National Emergency Management Organization of St Vincent and the Grenadines said the April 13 explosion was “not as energetic” as recent activity, but warned that more eruptions were possible in the coming days. Credit: UWISeismic Research via Storyful
