NEW YORK — Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a stunning homer off an otherwise dominant Jacob deGrom, Trevor Rogers beat the two-time Cy Young Award winner for the second time and the Miami Marlins blanked the New York Mets 3-0 on Saturday. DeGrom (0-1) matched a career best with 14 strikeouts over eight innings, Rogers fanned 10 in six and the teams combined for 28 overall. The 23-year-old Rogers (1-1) outpitched deGrom for the second time in nine major league starts. The left-hander got his first big league win against him in a 5-3 victory last Aug. 31. This was his second. A 2017 first-round draft pick, Rogers cruised in his third career outing against New York. He scattered three hits and two walks, retiring 11 straight in one stretch. Rogers mixed a fastball averaging 95 mph with a slider and changeup, inducing 19 swing-and-misses among his 82 pitches. He ended his outing with strikeouts of Michael Conforto and Pete Alonso, stranding two runners to preserve a 1-0 lead. Dylan Floro followed with a perfect seventh, Richard Bleier was helped by shortstop Miguel Rojas’ diving catch to rob pinch-hitter Kevin Pillar during a 1-2-3 eighth, and Yimi García completed the three-hitter for his first save, spelling struggling closer Anthony Bass. RAYS 4, YANKEES 0 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Austin Meadows and Randy Arozarena homered off Domingo Germán, helping Tampa Bay extend its mastery over New York. The Rays have won 10 of 12 regular-season games between the AL East rivals since the start of 2020. Tampa Bay also eliminated the Yankees from last year’s playoffs in a five-game series that went the distance. Six Tampa Bay pitchers combined to limit the Yankees to five hits. Meadows got things rolling for the Rays with a solo homer in the first inning, his third of the season. He had three hits in Tampa Bay’s 10-5 win over New York the previous day and has homered three times in eight career at-bats against Germán (0-2). Arozarena hit a 420-foot solo shot in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Andrew Kittredge (2-0) worked 1 2/3 innings for the victory. BREWERS 9, CARDINALS 5 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Avisaíl García homered, doubled and drove in five runs and Milwaukee ended St. Louis' winning streak at four games. Keston Hiura hit a three-run homer that capped a five-run burst in the seventh inning that made it 8-2. The Brewers won for the third time in four games. García’s two-run homer off Carlos Martínez (0-2) gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the fifth. García drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth and added a two-run double in the seventh. Brewers starter Adrian Houser (1-1) allowed runners in each of his five innings and was pulled after walking Yadier Molina to begin the sixth. Austin Dean hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals in the eighth. MARINERS 4, TWINS 3, 10 INNINGS MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mitch Haniger homered and hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, lifting Seattle past Minnesota. All three of Minnesota’s losses this season have come in the 10th, with the bullpen struggling with baseball’s new-as-of-2020 rule that starts each extra inning with a runner on second base. For Seattle, that was Taylor Trammell, who homered earlier in the game. Taylor Rogers (0-1) picked up Braden Bishop’s bunt in front of the mound, but he couldn’t get a clean grip and held off on a throw as a precaution. Haniger hit a one-out fly deep enough to left for Trammell to come home. Kendall Graveman (1-0) worked the ninth, and Keynan Middleton pitched a perfect 10th for the save. The Associated Press

France will lengthen the period between the first and second shots of mRNA anti-COVID vaccines to six weeks from four weeks as of April 14 to accelerate the inoculation campaign, Health Minister Olivier Veran told the JDD newspaper on Sunday. "That will allow us to vaccinate more quickly without reducing protection," Veran told the paper. France has approved use of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines.
ST. LOUIS — Avisaíl García homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis 9-5 on Saturday, ending the Cardinals' four-game winning streak. Keston Hiura hit a three-run homer that capped a five-run burst in the seventh inning that made it 8-2. The Brewers won for the third time in four games. García's two-run homer off Carlos Martínez gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the fifth. García drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth and added a two-run double in the seventh. His five RBIs marked his most since he drove in six on May 20, 2017 as a member of the White Sox. Brewers starter Adrian Houser (1-1) allowed runners in each of his five innings and was pulled after walking Yadier Molina to begin the sixth. Houser was aided by double plays in the second and third innings and he struck out Paul DeJong to escape a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. Martínez (0-2) gave up three runs in five innings. The right-hander has allowed seven earned runs in 10 innings this season. Austin Dean hit a three-run homer in the Cardinals eighth. It was his first home run since Sept. 26, 2019 when we played for Miami. Molina had three hits. TOWING THE LINE Justin Williams advanced to third base in the sixth after reaching on an error that scored the Cardinals’ first two runs. Williams was then hit by a line drive off Tommy Edman’s bat. Williams thought he was in foul territory, but plate umpire Alan Porter ruled Williams was on fair side of the base line and called him out, ending the inning. The play was not reviewable. GREAT COMPANY Nolan Arenado’s first-inning double extended his hitting streak to eight games, matching Roger Maris (1967) for the longest hitting streak for a new Cardinal. TRAINING ROOM Brewers: Placed 2B Kolten Wong on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain, selected IF/OF Jace Peterson from the alternate training site and transferred RHP Bobby Wahl (right oblique) to the 60-day IL. Cardinals: OF Tyler O’Neill was removed from the game after hitting into a double play in the second inning due to right groin tightness and was replaced by Dean. ... LHP Kwang Hyun Kim (back) will throw an extended game with about 90 pitches at the team’s alternate training site on Sunday and could join the club on its next road trip beginning April 16. UP NEXT LHP Brett Anderson (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will start for the Brewers against Daniel Ponce de Leon (1-0, 1.80 ERA) on Sunday. Anderson is 1-3 with a 3.32 ERA in four career starts against St. Louis, while Ponce de Leon allowed just one run in five innings while earning the win at Miami on Monday. __ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Joe Harris, The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Veteran Montreal lightweight John (The Bull) Makdessi won a split decision over Chile's Ignacio Bahamondes on a UFC Fight Night card Saturday. The judges scored the all-action bout 28-29, 29-28, 30-27 for Makdessi, who was the bookmakers' underdog. The Canadian held a 124-112 in significant strikes, according to UFC Stats. Makdessi (18-7-0) was taken to hospital after the fight "for precautionary reasons." It marked the 18th UFC fight for the 35-year-old Makdessi who made his debut with the promotion at UFC 124 in December 2010. He improved to 11-7-0 in the UFC. The 23-year-old Bahamondes, who moved to the U.S. at 16 to pursue his fighting dream, was making his UFC debut after posting a November win in Dana White's Contender Series. He had won seven of his previous eight fights. At six foot three, Bahamondes (11-4-0) had a seven-inch height advantage over Makdessi who prepared for the fight at The MMA Lab and several other gyms in Arizona. Former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson was in his corner. Bahamondes missed weight, tipping the scales at 156.75 — just over the 156-pound non-title limit for lightweights. He forfeited 20 per cent of his purse to Makdessi. After a good start, Bahamondes was hurt midway through the round when Makdessi clipped him with a left to the head. Makdessi punished him at the fence with a powerful right, forcing Bahamondes to reach for a clinch. Makdessi kept coming, cutting Bahamondes under the right eye. Makdessi scored with his jab as both fighters connected with strikes in the second round. Bahamondes also found his range, with Makdessi's face showing damage. Both fighters did damage in the third round, taking their lumps and punching back. Makdessi had not fought since March 2020 when he lost by unanimous decision to Francisco Trinaldo. He subsequently underwent knee surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament. In the main event at the UFC's Apex production facility, Marvin (The Italian Dream) Vettori used his superior grappling skills to take Kevin (Trailblazer) Holland down a record 11 times en route to a unanimous 50-44 decision. It was Vettori's fifth straight win. Vettori (17-4-1) is ranked No. 6 among UFC middleweight contenders while Holland (21-7-0) is No. 10. Determined action came at the end of the week from lawmakers in Annapolis after Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed police reform bills. The Republican governor vetoed legislation Friday that includes the core components of a series of police reform bills. The legislation, nearly a year in the making, is in response to the Minneapolis police in-custody death of George Floyd and the protests of thousands of people demanding more police accountability and transparency.
How did we never notice this before?
Vettori is slowly moving toward a title shot and he wasn’t going to be beaten by an opponent with such a gaping hole in his game.

The defending Stanley Cup champions found a way to get better, the NHL's top team solved a problem that has hurt it in the past, and another filled a major void created by an injury. Some of hockey's best teams got a head start on the trade deadline Saturday by making important moves and scooping up some of the hottest players on the market. The cap-strapped, reigning champion Tampa Bay Lightning surrendered three draft picks to get defenceman David Savard, the Colorado Avalanche landed veteran goaltender Devan Dubnyk, and the Florida Panthers did something to compensate for Aaron Ekblad's absence by acquiring defenceman Brandon Montour. “They have a team to go for another run and go for the Stanley Cup," Savard said of the Lightning. “They’ve had a great team for numbers of years, so I'm really excited to go on a team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup. I couldn’t be more pumped to go meet the guys and be part of the team and go on a run again.” Given the Lightning's salary-cap situation, general manager Julien BriseBois said a month ago, “Realistically, I think it’s unlikely that we’re going to be adding a player between now and the trade deadline.” It was only possible because the Columbus Blue Jackets retained half of Savard's salary — for a 2021 first- and a 2022 third-round pick — and the Detroit Red Wings took 25% for a fourth-rounder and Tampa Bay taking minor leaguer Brian Lashoff. Savard gives Tampa Bay a physical presence on the right side of the blue line, a role Zach Bogosian, now with Toronto, filled during the 2020 Cup run. The Lightning also expect to get 2019 MVP Nikita Kucherov back from hip surgery when the playoffs begin in mid-May. Kucherov, the Lighting's leading scorer on the way to the Cup, has been on long-term injured reserve all season. Colorado didn't go on as long a run in the playoff bubble as it would have liked after top two goalies Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz went down with injuries. After acquiring goalie Jonas Johansson last month, general manager Joe Sakic added more depth in goal with Dubnyk by sending defenceman Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round pick to San Jose. He also gave the locker room a boost with the Avalanche atop the league standings. “I think it sends a pretty strong message that obviously he believes in this group and that we are trying to make a run at this thing,” Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog said. “That’s been no secret from Day 1 of training camp.” Florida is a new addition to the class of Cup contenders and was in that stratosphere in large part because of Ekblad's play before his season-ending injury in late March. The Panthers can't replace Ekblad, but they took a step past his injury by sending a third-round pick to Buffalo for Montour. “He’s a very skilled defenceman,” Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov said. “He can help us with the puck and the offensive game, holds the puck really well. Good addition." With less than 48 hours remaining until the deadline, there are many prominent players still waiting to find out where they're going. Buffalo is also expected to trade winger Taylor Hall; Detroit centre Luke Glendening and goalie Jonathan Bernier are available; and Columbus could listen on captain Nick Foligno, who is a pending free agent. ___ Follow AP Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at https://twitter.com/SWhyno ___ More AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHL and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Stephen Whyno, The Associated Press
With close to one million British Columbians having received a first shot of COVID-19 vaccine, officials announced on Saturday that people aged 60 or older could call to register for their turn. The jump in age cohort is a big one. As of Thursday, those 65 or older could call to register. On Saturday, the province sent out a release bumping that up five years, to those people born in 1961 or earlier. Indigenous people 18 or older and those who are clinically extremely vulnerable can also now register to book their vaccine appointment through B.C.'s new Get Vaccinated system. The province is also vaccinating people between the ages of 55 and 65 with the AstraZeneca vaccine in local pharmacies throughout the province. People wait in line to receive an AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Vancouver on March 31.(CBC News) The province says that since the Get Vaccinated provincial registration and booking system started on April 6, nearly 650,000 British Columbians have registered and more than 170,000 have booked their shot. Nearly 170 mass vaccinations clinics throughout the province are now operating. The province hopes to vaccinate around 40,000 people a day. So far, 1,025,019 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, with 87,606 of those being second doses. A record high of 40,018 people were vaccinated in B.C. on Thursday.
