Pavel Korzh, the financial chief of Russian payment services provider Qiwi, has resigned for personal reasons, the company said on Wednesday, three months after Russia's central bank placed restrictions on some of the company's operations. Korzh's resignation was not due to any disagreements or disputes within the company on matters such as accounting principles, practices, financial statement disclosures, and compliance procedures, Qiwi said. In December, Russia's central bank imposed some restrictions on Qiwi Bank, part of the wider Qiwi group, including suspending or limiting most types of payments to foreign merchants and money transfers to prepaid cards from corporate accounts.

The European Central Bank should have a greater say in supervising clearing houses in the European Union if more of that business moves to the bloc next year as a result of Brexit, ECB board member Fabio Panetta said on Wednesday. The EU has given itself until June 2022 to decide whether to keep granting access to UK clearers, which have dominated this business for years, particularly in derivatives. Panetta said current rules give too little power to EU institutions such as the ECB and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), arguing this would need to change if clearing is forced out of London.
Governments and energy companies are placing large bets on clean hydrogen playing a leading role in efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but its future uses and costs are highly uncertain. "Without hydrogen by 2050 we cannot aim to be a net zero (carbon) economy," Royal Dutch Shell CEO Ben van Beurden told the CERAWeek online conference this week. The universe's most abundant element, hydrogen has been touted for decades as an alternative to fossil fuels, but attempts to commercialise it for use in vehicles and industry have largely failed.

(Bloomberg) -- A probe by Germany’s financial watchdog found irregularities with how Greensill Bank AG booked certain assets, compounding the woes of parent company Greensill Capital as it seeks to stave off a damaging collapse.BaFin mandated KPMG with a forensic investigation last year as part of a wider probe, according to people familiar with the matter. One of the most serious findings was that the bank had booked claims for transactions that hadn’t yet occurred but which were accounted for as if they had, the people said, asking to remain anonymous because the information isn’t public. The questionable claims were related to companies associated with British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta, an early client of Greensill whose close relationship with the entrepreneur has been a focus of BaFin’s investigation for some time.A Greensill spokesman and KPMG spokeswoman declined to comment. Representatives for BaFin and Gupta weren’t immediately available to comment.Lex Greensill has seen his supply chain finance empire rapidly unravel this week as investors cut ties with him over concerns about the creditworthiness of his borrowers. Greensill Capital is planning to go ahead with an insolvency filing as it pursues a sale of the company, according to people familiar with the matter. It’s in talks with the combination of Athene Holding Ltd. and Apollo Global Management Inc. to sell its operating business, the people said.Supply chain finance is a method of speeding up payments between companies. While it is a service widely offered by banks and other intermediaries, it can be misused to hide debt.BaFin has increased its scrutiny of Bremen-based Greensill Bank, which provides funding to its parent and assumes some of its credit risk, since the middle of last year over its out-sized exposure to Gupta, a steel and metals magnate. The regulator is now close to freezing payments in and out of the bank and has taken it under tight oversight to limit damage for depositors, people familiar with matter said earlier on Wednesday.Greensill’s effort to disrupt a niche part of global finance was also derailed when credit insurance backing some of his firm’s loans lapsed, triggering uncertainty about their value and forcing Credit Suisse Group AG to freeze a client fund that bought the debt.BaFin came under pressure for its handling of the Wirecard AG scandal, where the watchdog was seen as slow to respond to allegations of wrongdoing. That electronic payments company, which collapsed in June, also relied on a German banking unit to fuel its growth.(Updates with role of investors in fourth paragraph)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.
(Bloomberg) -- Stock futures fell as a spike in Treasury yields added to concern over stretched equity valuations amid an uneven economic recovery from a pandemic-induced recession. The dollar rose.Gains in S&P 500 contracts started to fade after data showed the number of employees at U.S. businesses rose in February by less than expected, underscoring the labor market’s struggle to rebound. As Treasuries tumbled, stock futures erased their earlier advance. Futures on the Nasdaq 100 underperformed, following Tuesday’s rout in big tech. Cryptocurrency-exposed shares jumped in premarket trading, with Bitcoin topping $50,000.Wednesday’s jobs reading indicate that employment gains continue to be held back by pandemic-related constraints on businesses and economic activity. Even so, many economists expect a meaningful improvement in the labor market in the coming months as Covid-19 vaccinations pick up and virus concerns ease. The Senate is planning to formally open debate on President Joe Biden’s pandemic-relief bill as soon as Wednesday afternoon.“The markets have been all over the place for the past few days, alternating between ‘risk-on’ and ‘risk-off’ as investors have tried to weigh the impact of rising yields against the prospects of a strong economic rebound with the ongoing Covid vaccine rollouts,” said Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at ThinkMarkets.Buying U.S. stocks with borrowed money has yet to become excessive even after a bull-market surge, according to Stephen Suttmeier, a Bank of America Corp. analyst. He cited a comparison between the total amount of margin debt and the S&P 500’s market value in a report Monday. Margin loans increased 66% to a record $798.6 billion for the 10 months ended in January, data compiled by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority show. The latest total equaled 2.5% of the S&P 500’s value, below a peak of 3.1% in January 2014.“Investors are not over-levered,” Suttmeier wrote. Some key events to watch this week:OPEC+ meeting on output Thursday.U.S. factory orders, initial jobless claims and durable goods orders are due Thursday. The February U.S. employment report on Friday will provide an update on the speed and direction of the nation’s labor market recovery. These are some of the main moves in markets:StocksFutures on the S&P 500 Index dipped 0.3% as of 9:20 a.m. New York time. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index decreased 0.2%.The MSCI Asia Pacific Index gained 1.2%.The MSCI Emerging Market Index advanced 1.5%.CurrenciesThe Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index increased 0.3%.The euro declined 0.4% to $1.2048.The Japanese yen depreciated 0.2% to 106.93 per dollar.BondsThe yield on 10-year Treasuries rose eight basis points to 1.47%.Germany’s 10-year yield climbed four basis points to -0.32%.Britain’s 10-year yield advanced seven basis points to 0.761%.CommoditiesWest Texas Intermediate crude advanced 1% to $60.34 a barrel.Gold slid 1.4% to $1,713.59 an ounce.Silver fell 2.2% to $26.17 per ounce. For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.
When I heard the news that Hayley Kiyoko was releasing a perfume, I said out loud to no one in particular, “Thank Lesbian Jesus! Somebody has finally found a way to bottle gaydar.” Much like the synthpop music that made her famous, Kiyoko’s energy is upbeat and fun, but at her core is radical, unapologetic inclusivity. For many queer people, her music is like a warm hug of acceptance — so her new gender-inclusive fragrance, Hue, is a perfect next step. Created with Kiyoko’s style and audience in mind, Hue (made in partnership with Slate Brands) toes the line between masculine and feminine so beautifully that it stands to be armor for legions of young people, gender notwithstanding, for years to come. Conveniently, that’s exactly how Kiyoko wants her fragrance to be used: as protection, a way to make its wearers feel fearless when facing the world. “I find a lot of comfort in fragrance,” she tells me over the phone. “Growing up, I would douse my body with Elizabeth Arden Green Tea. It would give me the courage to be myself, speak to girls, and be more social. I’ve never left the house without spraying on perfume — it’s my armor.” Kiyoko always gravitated towards fragrance as a boost of confidence, and now, she wants to give other people that same feeling. At first sniff, Hue starts out somewhere between floral and clean laundry. As it dries, it settles into citrus and musk, a breezy combination that’s not overpowering in a way that feels intentional. “The scent is complicated. The official notes start out with blood orange and freesia,” Kiyoko explains, “then it transitions into special rose, lychee, and pink magnolia. Once it dries down, it turns into a musk and a special cacao. It’s all over the place, but it all works so well together.” Kiyoko, who identifies as a gay woman, has always battled with her feminine and masculine sides, so her goal for this gender-neutral perfume was to bottle both those extremes. Fair to say, I think she nailed it: Somehow, it makes me — a gay woman who has barely worn perfume since it was cool to smell like an Abercrombie store — feel a mix of sexy, approachable, and safe. And then there’s the actual bottle. I’ve always thought of perfume bottles as delicate pieces of glass that I’d be scared to break, but Kiyoko has made a bottle fit for aesthetic value and clumsy folks alike. Deep red with gold detailing, the chunky bottle is made of hearty glass, and fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. “I don’t really use a purse, so I wanted a bottle that I could carry just in my pocket,” Kiyoko says. “I also wanted it to be bold. The red is powerful and volatile, but also vulnerable. Wherever you keep it, I want it to stand out.” Hayley kiyoko releasing perfume so us gays can recognize each other by scent🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🤩✨— Lana (@budgiesarecute) January 30, 2021 In a time when we’re barely going outside (and probably showering less), Hue is a welcome, comforting scent that I can’t wait to wear everywhere from the supermarket to my eventual return to the office. Kiyoko has successfully brought gender inclusivity to a space that hasn’t always welcomed fluidity, and the fragrance feels both powerful and calming in a way I foresee needing as we reenter society. I feel a deep sense of pride as Kiyoko and I end our conversation talking about snow and my recent gay wedding. For both the way it smells and the care and thought behind Hue, I can’t recommend it enough — and for all you queer women out there, you definitely need a bottle so we can finally identify each other in the wild.
