Will the ‘work-from-home’ and ‘urban exodus’ trends last?
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a historic upheaval in transportation habits as scores of workers abandoned traditional job sites for their own homes. At the same time, a snapshot of data from Statistics Canada suggests a growing number of people are ditching big cities for smaller communities.
Tom Rand, the author of the book Climate Capitalism, says it’s complicated to judge how these changes impact carbon emissions. He predicts an end to mandatory Monday-to-Friday on-site hours for employees where possible, but remains skeptical of a lasting urban exodus.
