Firefighters in La Palma Make Path to Divert Lava Flow

Firefighters on the volcano-hit Canary Island of La Palma who were using earth-moving equipment to redirect the flow of lava to minimize damage to roads and property said on September 22 that they were seeing positive results.

Overnight, the Gran Canaria Firefighters worked to divert the lava by flattening some ground in the town of Todoque and moving obstacles. According to a recent statement, they were seeing positive results.

This footage, uploaded to Twitter by the Bomberos Gran Canaria, shows the lava skirting a road.

Around 200 buildings in the path of the lava have been destroyed, following the initial eruption of the island’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on September 19, Telecinco said. Around 6,000 people have been evacuated, the news site said.
