Elon Musk calls for breaking up Amazon

Yahoo Finance's Brian Sozzi, Alexis Christoforous, and Heidi Chung break down the market action for Tesla after CEO Elon Musk blasted Amazon on Twitter.

Video Transcript

BRIAN SOZZI: I do want to get to Heidi Chung who's closely watching the battle between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla founder Elon Musk. Heidi?

HEIDI CHUNG: Hey, Brian. Yeah, it's the battle of the billionaires. Tesla and the SpaceX CEO Elon Musk taking a job at Amazon and its CEO Jeff Bezos yesterday on Twitter. Author Alex Berenson actually tweeted a screenshot showing that his upcoming book about COVID-19 did not meet Amazon guidelines for sale. Elon Musk took to Twitter. He responded to that tweet, saying, quote, "This is insane @JeffBezos." Then he separately tweeted another response saying, quote, "Time to break up Amazon. Monopolies are wrong!"

And so I want to note really important things here, two important points. First, Berenson has been a critic of the coronavirus lockdowns. And we know that Elon Musk has also been very vocal about that. Berenson had previously suggested that he does not believe that the death-- death rate that we have been hearing about the virus has been accurate. And second, Elon musk and Jeff Bezos have been going at it for quite some time. Most notably though, Elon Musk has been taking jabs at Jeff Bezos on Twitter previously back in April of 2019.

"MIT Technology Review" tweeted a story that Amazon was planning to launch a constellation of internet satellites into space. And Elon Musk tweeted at that saying, quote, "@JeffBezos, copycat." So certainly both Musk and Jeff Bezos are known to have their separate space initiatives. They're both trying to get people into space. But Musk this past weekend, really a historic moment for the company and him himself. He launched-- he was the first private company to launch astronauts into orbit. So that battle continuing between the billionaires. We'll be closely watching to see where that heads going forward.

BRIAN SOZZI: Yeah, it must be nice to have toys like this, like big giant rockets and go to Mars and the moon. Heidi Chung, thanks so much.
