David Perdue to run for Georgia governor: media

Former U.S. Senator and Trump ally David Perdue is set to challenge the Republican incumbent Brian Kemp in the race for Georgia governor, according to local media reports.

Perdue is set to announce his candidacy on Monday, which would reopen the rift between Republicans in a key battleground state.

Reports say Trump recruited Perdue to run against Kemp after he refused to help the former president overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, which ultimately went to Joe Biden.

Trump's false claims of voter fraud proved to be a divisive issue in the Georgia runoffs for the U.S. Senate last year, when Perdue and fellow Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler lost to Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

Responding to the Sunday media reports, a Kemp campaign spokesman blasted Perdue as "the man who lost Republicans the United States Senate."

Neither Perdue nor the Georgia Republican Party were immediately available to comment.

The Republican nominee will likely face Democratic voting rights activist Stacey Abrams, who announced Wednesday that she would be running for governor again after losing to Kemp in 2018.
