A major Japanese auto lobby said it was concerned about a new U.S. law that restricts tax credits for electric vehicles to those assembled in North America. The Biden administration said on Tuesday about 20 models still qualify for tax credits of up to $7,500. Credits end immediately for about 70% of the 72 models that were previously eligible, according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry trade group.
CODY, Wyo. (AP) — The rush to build wind farms to combat climate change is colliding with preservation of one of the U.S. West’s most spectacular predators — the golden eagle — as the species teeters on the edge of decline. Ground zero in the conflict is Wyoming, a stronghold for golden eagles that soar on 7-foot (2-meter) wings and a favored location for wind farms. As wind turbines proliferate, scientists say deaths from collisions could drive down golden eagle numbers considered stable at bes
Canadian banks are expected to post declines in profits on average in the third quarter as a murky economic outlook drives up provisions for credit losses (PCL) while market turmoil pressures capital markets and wealth management results, analysts and investors said. The banks, which will begin reporting quarterly results next Wednesday, will benefit from increased margins from higher interest rates while loan growth remains strong despite some slowing in mortgage lending, helping offset declines elsewhere. Canada's Big Six banks - Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Bank of Montreal (BMO), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and National Bank of Canada - are expected to report an average drop of 3.7% in adjusted earnings per share (EPS) from both the previous quarter and a year earlier.
HONG KONG (Reuters) -The operator of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) flagged continued pressures from global political tensions and other negative factors as it posted a 27% fall in first-half profit on Wednesday. "Looking ahead, we know that there will continue to be headwinds," Nicolas Aguzin, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd chief executive, told reporters on a post-results conference call. "Especially in the short term, geopolitics, market volatility and the rising interest rate environment will continue to impact our markets," Aguzin added.
HOUSTON (Reuters) -Oil prices rose about 1.5% after hitting a six-month low on Wednesday, as a steeper-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude stocks outweighed concerns over rising Russian output and exports as well as recession fears. U.S. crude stocks fell by 7.1 million barrels in the week to Aug. 12 to 425 million barrels, Energy Information Administration (EIA) data showed, compared with analysts' forecasts for a 275,000-barrel drop in a Reuters poll. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $1.58, or 1.8%, to $88.11 per barrel.
(Reuters) -Kohl's Corp cut its full-year sales and profit forecasts on Thursday, squeezed by steeper discounts and higher costs amid dwindling demand for clothing and shoes in the face of high inflation, sending its shares down 5%. The U.S. department store chain joined top retailers including Target Corp and Best Buy Co to warn of a profit squeeze, as decades-high inflation has made Americans wary of opening their wallets for apparel and other discretionary goods. The demand slump has left several retailers with bloated inventories, forcing them to offload excess stocks through steep discounts and clearance sales heading into the back-to-school season.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The head of the nation's largest railroad union says the report designed to help resolve stalled contract talks with freight railroads doesn't do enough to address concerns about working conditions, even though it suggests 24% raises. The railroads indicated earlier this week that they were ready to hammer out a deal based on the recommendations of the Presidential Emergency Board that Joe Biden appointed last month. But Thursday's first comments from union leadership suggest
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dubai International Airport saw a surge in passengers over the first half of 2022 as pandemic restrictions eased and the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar will further boost traffic to the city-state’s second airfield, its chief executive said Wednesday. Paul Griffiths, who oversees the world’s busiest airport for international travel, told The Associated Press that the airport handled 160% more traffic over the past six months compared to the same period last y
SANTIAGO (Reuters) -Chile's gross domestic product came in below expectations in the second quarter of 2022, central bank data showed on Thursday, leading economists to forecast a potential recession as pandemic-related stimulus is unwound. The performance highlighted Chile's struggle to grow as the central bank aggressively tightens its monetary policy to tame soaring inflation, which reached a near three-decade high last month. "Chile's economy merely stagnated in Q2 and the chances are high that it will fall into recession over the second half of the year," Capital Economics' Latin America economist Kimberley Sperrfechter said in a note.
When making your travel budget, don’t assume that lodging and airfare will be your biggest expense. Now, more than ever, rental cars are shaping up to be one of the biggest — and stubbornly high — aspects of people’s vacation budgets. While airfare and lodging prices are certainly near all-time highs, rental cars are among the biggest price increases of all travel expenses. When comparing prices for July 2022 versus July 2019 (the last normal summer pre-pandemic), hotel prices are up 7% , accord
SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) -China's banking regulator is scrutinising property loan portfolios of some local and foreign lenders to assess systemic risks, sources with knowledge of the matter said, as a crisis in the real estate sector worsens and weighs heavily on the economy. As part of their assessment, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) is looking at banks' loan book exposure to developers to find out if those credit decisions were made according to the rules, one of the sources said. The aim is to measure risks to the financial system from the ongoing property sector turmoil in the world's second-largest economy, two of the sources said.
(Reuters) -Target Corp reported a bigger-than-expected 90% fall in quarterly earnings on Wednesday and missed estimates for comparable sales as it struggled to lure inflation-hit shoppers with steep discounts on apparel, electronics and home goods. As Target relies more on discretionary categories, it is prone to take a bigger hit during tougher times than its rivals such as Walmart Inc, where groceries and packaged food items get more shelf space. Walmart beat profit estimates as its core base of low-to-middle income shoppers flocked to its stores for bargains on groceries.
