COVID-19 booster shots 90% effective against Omicron hospitalization: CDC

Yahoo Finance's Anjalee Khemlani discusses how the CDC says the COVID-19 booster shots are effective against the Omicron variant.

Video Transcript

- Welcome back. The CDC released new data today showing that booster COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are 90% effective at preventing hospitalizations from the Omicron variant. Yahoo Finance's Health Reporter Anjalee Khemlani joins us now for more. Anjalee, break down these latest findings for us.

ANJALEE KHEMLANI: Well, Emily, what the CDC revealed actually just reinforces what we've seen across the world with data that has popped up, especially in Israel, for example, about the benefits of that booster dose. We saw that, of course, as you mentioned, the doses held up 90% in preventing hospitalizations and was particularly effective in ages 50 and older, this of course coming at a time where we see a rise continuing in hospitalizations.

Even though admissions have started to decrease in some parts of the country, we are still seeing ongoing hospitalizations as well as some ICU, which indicates severe illness. And that, in particular, does indicate that there are still a number of unvaccinated people, or those who have not gotten their boosters, being affected by this new variant.

We know that the data did also provide support for the idea that the boosters protect better against Delta than they do against Omicron, which has proven to be able to elude just a little bit of the protection, which is why we're seeing so many breakthrough cases, even for individuals with boosters, but as has been reported before, those cases are largely modeled. And that's where this whole milder disease comes from for Omicron. But it is largely for those who are vaccinated or boosted. Back to you.

- Yahoo Finance's Anjalee Khemlani, thank you so much.
