Barbados Declares Rihanna a National Hero as Nation Becomes Republic

Barbados-born singer Rihanna was declared a National Hero of Barbados during a ceremony celebrating the country becoming a republic on November 30.

As of Tuesday, Barbados ceased to be a constitutional monarchy and removed the Queen as its head of state.

“May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your words, by your actions and to do credit wherever you shall go,” Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said as she presented Rihanna with the designation.

The Barbados Order of National Heroes was established in 1998, when 10 prominent Barbadians were nominated to the group. The government called for public nominations to add to the order in March 2021. Rihanna was to be the first inductee since the order was established.
